Look 2 weeks ago i would of agreed. Since then his mentalty wasnt in it. And he has broke his ankle or something preety bad in a gaelic footy match in ireland. Bryne while had major upside was made of glass. Huge respect for him but he stuffed up. Newman alot more durable with great skill aswell. And has finals experience. Hes a carlton player now so i will give him the respect he deserves.... to my knowlage byrne is not a carlton player anymore so good luck to him with his life and i hope he enjoys it back home. One last point... oshea shaw and mullet were all drafted or picked up as dfa. Meaning their worth was squat to begin with.. swans had a one year deal for newman ready to go. I feel newman will be better for us more than byrne the same as i feel fasolo will be better for us more than wright.
Don't want to clog up the bloke's welcome thread, but there's like one sentence in all these words relevant to the discussion and I disagree with it. Byrne was a potential 200 gamer, Newman imo will be a really handy 50 gamer.

Its ok to disagree. But reality is showing that your opinion is not the case. Newman now has a good chance to reach 100 plus games with carlton. For a future forth. Thats gold

But he couldn't get on the park. Potential and $5 gets me a bad coffee. Newman was best 22 in a finals team last year whose only knock was he couldn't get a game behind a former captain and an All Australian. I liked what Casey might have offered but, this is most definitely and upgrade.
If nothing else he puts pressure on the young blokes with a bit more athletic ability to get on with their preparation and development and compete for spots. Far from the cast offs we have been acquiring.
You are more than welcome, Nick.

Not only a stella 2017. But played 8 of your last games in a row including week one of finals and going of stats.... looked to be averaging about 18-19 pos per game. Brilliant byrne replace ment.
Ultimately Byrne was constantly injured and so was never going to become the player we'd hoped. His recent injury while playing gaelic only further confirms it (unfortunately).

He has the potential to be an upgrade on Byrne. Seems durable at the very least.

Wouldnt say upgrade. Byrne when healthy was a jet.

Newman's hands aren't as clean and not many have Byrne's agility through traffic.

BUT potentially a good compliment to Docherty and a long term replacement for Simmo, who can now rotate more as an outside mid.

Backline looks very solid now:

FB: Plowman Weitering Simpson
HB: Docherty Marchbank Newman/Williamson

Allows us to scrap Daisy from there too, where I felt his lack of defense screwed us.
I like Newman because he’s a tough old fashioned footy player. Turns up every week and has a dip. Played more games in two years in a lot stronger swans line up than Byrne did in 5 years with us (22 games).

Hopefully Mr Russell gets him super fit because you can back it in he will be extremely motivated to lock down a spot in our back 6.

I guess I've been wrong about what reality means all these years...
Got me there. Preety optimistic of me saying newman has a chance of reaching more games than byrne let alone 100 for carlton. Maybe that part of reality hasnt played its part yet.. but ya gotta admit.. there is more hope of newman making it than than byrne ever will now.. Meaning yes. Was a clear upgrade... edit. Future 4th based on this years ladder is pick 55, not really nothing.
Think most will be optimistic we can finish above 18th next year, and the pick will likely be pushed back further by F/S and academy picks.

It's not nothing, but it's not far off. Well worth the risk given where we're at right now.

I like him and think at worst he adds depth and helps cover for the loss of Byrne.

Just to play Devi's advocate, does anyone see him actually breaking into our best 22 barring an injury crisis?

Seems like Aaron Mullet all over again. But this time we paid more.
I’ll happily say that I never rated Mullet but I do rate Newman.

Harder at it, better kick, quicker thinker, surer hands. Think we’ve got one here.

The original comment is regarding Newman being an upgrade, therefore the fact Byrne is now retired is irrelevant to the argument.
