25 Greatest bulldogs

I don’t know where I gave the impression this is about politics or ideology.

Blackburn is a trailblazer for Bulldogs women’s footy. She will be historically significant for the club, and still mentioned in 50 years. She also happens to be a premiership captain, 3x AA, 5x B&F, and one of the best players her competition has seen.

On the contrary, I think the dismissal of Blackburn as a legitimate candidate for this list is entirely rooted in ideology/politics. A resume like hers cannot be ignored
It doesn’t matter how much of an icon or trailblazer you think she is, it’s in a much much lesser competition. From participating numbers to interest, cultural significance, money and pressure. We really are comparing apple and oranges. Easton captained only one of two premierships for this club, and he captained amazingly well. When did this get diminished below ‘trailblazers’? When did this get diminished by our fans? Charlie Sutton was a living God in the western suburbs throughout the 60’s 70’s 80’s and 90’s as he should’ve been.
As we said Ellie is our best female, legend. And this is the clubs best 24 men’s players, Easton should still be in this list for that humongous achievement. You could win 10 Brownlows but to lead your team to the ultimate, is the ultimate, just had to be there, no real understanding of what a premiership is and means and meant to most fans. We couldn’t have done it without him, he was that good.

When the final era 5 were announced, thought who’s Blackburn??
Well and truly familiar with every other name from each era but not Blackburn!
Didn’t click who it was until coming on here.. My point is, I think I’ve maybe watched 1 AFLW game since its inception, hence why unfamiliar with her.
To be honest I have zero interest whatsoever in AFLW and would rather watch the TV test pattern.
Maybe I’m totally out of touch with how sport now operates in our modern virtue signalling world, and need to get out more?
I do know my local footy club loves now having female teams with the money that was thrown at them for amenities etc..

Mistake in the article on the club website has Blackburn's AFLW Best & Fairest votes at 10. Correct number is 79, fwiw. Had the 2nd most leaguewide up until the injury last season (is now 4th).

What is it worth? Probably about the same as the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson and Manny Pacquiao always being included on 25 Greatest Boxers lists, even though they didn't compete in the big boy division.

No issue with Wood not making it and actually not certain Tom Libba should have been.

I won't lose sleep over the Blackburn inclusion but someone like Rohan Smith has every right to feel a bit miffed at missing out.

Ranking players across multiple eras and genders is as pointless as it is stupid.
I would much rather be comparing our premiership teams than players.

I have always felt we focus on the individual too much as a club.

Sorry.

Scanning through the photos on our website of the greatest 25, Scott West appears ageless and could easily slip into a Bulldogs jumper and run out for our current team.;)

Even that is problematic.

How can anybody possibly compare the two given most people who saw the 1954 premiership are dead?

At this point its always been accepted lore that EJ is the greatest bulldog of all time. Even though most people who say so haven't seen more than a fragment of vision of his playing career. Much the same could be said of the 1954 Premiership side. This was especially so when they held an exalted place in our history as teh only team to have done so.

Putting aside those not insignificant problem theres the issue of subjectivity, Pro Vs Amateur and any number of other problems that arise.

Its just another pointless excursion down into the rabbit hole.

Now we’ve done our list of 25/24 greatest players of all time, which is almost impossible across different eras, what about greatest men and women in the clubs history, everything. Playing, coaching, administration, media, board, volunteering etc.
Post WWII list, with greater emphasis on more recently into professional era. could be:
  • EJ, player, captain, coach, media, state of Origin etc.
  • Charlie Sutton, player, captain, coach (premiership captain/coach) President, always a true legend around the club and representative for our club.
  • Peter Gordon, 2 inspiring stints as president, once as a saviour once as a premiership leader. Spoke in media very well for our club.
  • Chris Grant, awesome player, stuck loyal in high money professional era. Very good football administrator who was part of our premiership.
  • Luke Beverage, average player, initially unifying and draught breaking premiership coach, consistently keeps team in top half.
Are these the 5 greatest bulldogs?
Then
  • Bont.
  • Luke Darcy, great player and board member who hired Bevo and fathered Sam… and Will… A Footscray ruckman reading the news on channel 7! Long term media performer and promoter of the club.
  • Johnno. Awesome player, Good post playing media career, non Footscray fans love him because of his happy demeanour.
  • Terry Wallace. Short great career as player, great coach who promoted the club. Great in media.
  • Terry Wheeler. Extremely loyal player and short food unifying coaching career. Great at channel 7 post coaching.
  • Dougie Hawkins, larrikin player and more larrikin post career media performer.
  • Ted Whitten Junior. Great shortish career, always represents his father and club well through the foundation.
  • Irene Charfield. Saviour and consistent stalwart.
  • David Smorgon, very good president who tried his best to not let our club go down the ‘poor me’ path that some smaller clubs are still trapped in.
  • Susan Alberti. Similar to Smorgo, and very good for the start of AFLW.
  • Michael Malthouse. Brought back respect to our club after a tragic decade of poor results and loss of so many champions to other clubs. Coached so many players that fathered sons to the next generation.

Good to see Saint Irene in there

I come in peace.

Just read this in our local rag and thought you might appreciate it.

Jeremy McGovern calls Bont the Godfather.

Jeremy McGovern: West Coast Eagles great says Marcus Bontempelli, Nick Daicos among his top five AFL stars
