Kevin Sheedy said players like James Hird are worth keeping on the list even though they may only play 10 games in the year at their age because people love to see the champions play.

Due to list constraints clubs don't have a lot of room to keep players on their lists knowing they will probably only play half the season.

Solution for AFL fans to see champion footballers play longer?

- Anyone who has played over 250 games should be included outside the main list.

This may result in players like Nathan Buckley getting an extra year or two on the list even though the club knows he is unlikely to play too many games. There would be nothing to lose and in most cases the AFL supporters in general benefit by getting the chance to see the elite players get an extra year or two.

The pros: We all get to see the star players for longer.
The cons: Clubs with heaps of old players get to bring in a couple of extra kids

Sheedy should retire from coaching and go into the AFL offices, I would like to see him as a future CEO of the league.

Would that mean expanding the veterans list? I read or rather heard that you could only have 2 players on that list.

You can have a maximum of 4 veterans, but only a maximum of 2 veterans outside your main list of 38.

So you could have up to 40 senior players, at the expense of rookie spots.

I think they already are, veterans salary is not included in the cap, and to stack up 250 games that is more than the year limit to what is required to be a veteran.
