Player Watch #27: Jack Darling

Only just noticed he was 19th in our B&F from 22 games.

This seems incredibly harsh imo. He looked to play a lot of smart and selfless football for us.

Konstanty almost 20 votes better?

Caleb Daniel ~2x better season?

Doesn't exactly fill me with faith in our internal measures.

Darling should have been in the top 10 for some of his sheer acts on the field alone this year.
1. Playing with that nasty shin injury which looked like it had been thru a deli slicer.
2. That game where he did a long run chase down tackle to change the momentum.
3. His perfectly execute back flip onto his feet after market the pill. Mary Lou Retton would have been proud of that.

Having Daniel so high up and LMac also above him missing many games at the end says it all. We have junior footy parent of players style voting going on here. The Brownlow Voting is a clown show, a shame it’s the same with the Syd Barker as well.

Our club is not alone here.

I’ve not been to a SBM night, but do they explain how the voting works?
Is it multiple people/coaches who are doing the votes after each game?

I understand clubs don’t want it to be a midfielders award like the Brownlow, so they put an emphasis on ‘playing your role’ but it’s currently a shambles.

I do feel like we at least had the right result for first place.

My mate has just sent me a copy of the voting slip that 4 of the coaches use at the end if each match. It’s looks like some of the spots are automatically taken each week

Yeah well 9 disposals and 1 goal per game probably isn't getting top 10 anywhere.
He was ok and I hope he plays much less in 26.

Don't love or hate his work. Would have loved him ten years ago.

As opposed to Tom Powell who had 23 disposals per game, 18 of which were generally useless. Darling was top three in that forward line for importance. The sight of him leading at the ball, turning around, and begging someone to come at him never got old

He'll be glad, I took the young lad to training in January and had the opportunity to chat with Jack and get the kids footy signed, he definitely signed it with a #27, said "I'll get this ****ing right one day" and changed it to a #28.
