Justin McInerney
Sydney Swans youngster Justin McInerney is lightning-quick, an endurance machine and a clean user of the footy who’s best used on a wing or at half-back. The Northern Knights product was called up for his AFL debut against Melbourne at the SCG in Round 4, 2019, and although he wouldn’t feature at the top level again in his first year at the club, he was a stand-out in the NEAFL. McInerney is eyeing more opportunities at senior level in 2020.

Justin McInerney
DOB: 18 August 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #44, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Banyule (Vic)/Marcellin College (Vic)/Northern U18

They just look at stats half the time that watching the game.

I don't think McInerney is the biggest issue we have right now, his still running to the right spots, finding the ball and doing what needs to be done.

If his disposal was up to scratch over the weekend we wouldn't be too concerned with his performance.

You haven’t watched football in the last 10 years?

It’s a turnover game, we’d be better off him not touching it at all than handing it straight back to the opposition

He was shocking especially in the 3rd I’m whatever about the 4th but the 3rd at least 2 of their goals came directly from his turnovers

One thing we can say about McInerney is that he is very consistent. Every time he gets the ball you can almost be 100% sure that the opposition will have the ball next.
He did have a fair few score involvements on Sunday…..was up there w the umps

Up until Sunday, I had been a huge fan of McInerney even though he had turned it over a few times in the past but what he dished up on Sunday was third grade stuff. That was as bad a performance than I can remember.

I have been a fan since being listed , due to my Knights connection and very similar to you, Sunday broke the connection for me,

Same here. Doesn't change my view that he's a gun, he's always going to have turn overs because there is so much risk involved in being creative, and I'm happy to cop that. Sunday was the first time where I thought he was just being careless in basic situations.

But I trust he'll come good. Sometimes it's just contagious. And right now throughout the team every quick play, handball, tackle, ground ball get, overlap etc is a bit off. All of a sudden someone like Jmac (add Lloyd, Roberts and Florent to that mix) has to worry about gaining possession effectively on top of disposing efficiently. It just naturally makes everything harder. When the ball flows through the ground on a string it's harder to stuff it up.

Cox and the medicos need to do something to reignite that connection, otherwise blokes like Jmac and Hayward will continue to cop the whip.

I like McInerney but with all due respect I feel like you're being way too easy on him here. It's Cox & the medical staff's fault that McInerney's not executing basically the only thing he's in the team for, which is his ball use? No one else has the power to make him decide to lazily slide the ball onto his boot as he so often does, increasing the chance of it being a shank or a grubber ball.

I probably am being easy on him because he has credits in the bank for me. Sunday was definitely lazy as you say, and he frustrated me. I just think it's a symptom of a larger issue. Jmac isn't the reason why we lost on Sunday, and he still did a fair bit right. And I genuinely think he would be better placed to perform more efficiently in a well oiled machine as he has in the past.

So yeah I think Cox needs to get the basics defragmented otherwise guys like jmac, who is a weapon, will just wilt.

McInerney's averaging 20+ disposals, the most in his career so far, and is fourth at the Swans for average disposals this year. I am sure that, with Gulden out especially, it would be Cox's plan & intent for us to get the ball in McInerney's hands. So in that regard, I would say the plan is working to a degree. McInerney's just not holding up his end of the bargain with his ball use.

And FWIW, he's not alone. Roberts & Lloyd are our two leading disposal getters, which in theory should be a good thing, because it means the ball's in the hands of two outside, classy distributors. Unfortunately neither are distributing with any class right now.

That moment when we had all the momentum & moving the ball at all times, he had the opportunity to pass to Ladhams but chose to go back, pause, pause a bit longer, then pulled the trigger in the middle & failed to nail a 20m kick for a turnover & goal.

That was just a reinforcement of what I've seen over the last few years.

Lloyd can not be a regular accurate kick over 20 m.
Roberts may be the same over 25 - 30m.

Roberts is killing us at the moment. Finds the ball and we know how good he can be. But at the moment his turnovers at the defensive end are killing us the most out of anyone right now.

I don't disagree. I also am struggling to think of a target that he's hit inside 50 this year. Or Lloyd. Or even McInerney for that matter. In fact of the four whipping boys of flankerdom, I think Florent's probably been the best going inside 50 off the top of my head, and he's getting it the least out of any of them.

It's incredibly frustrating because with Gulden out, we really needed the distributors in our side to step up and fill the void, and instead they've gone the other way.

Lloyd has always been good to hit a short target but roberts I've seen more as a thumping kick rather than an accurate kick. Both conservative imo. Missing Gulden badly. Add the form of blakey & juzzy being shithouse. Ouch. I think it's what makes bice stand out even more.

Disagree

Yes Roberts is struggling but maybe take note of how and where he is getting the ball, usually under severe pressure in our backline

JMac fluffs kicks most 12 year olds would be able to execute when he’s not under any pressure

If he’s the elite winger that some believe him to be then he should be stepping up in Errol’s absence and getting 25+ quality possessions

Won’t happen though because he’s a B/C grader at best

For sure alot of Roberts work is under pressure but he has demonstrated much better decision making and execution in the past. He is having a pretty poor patch on that front.
