Past #28: Kayne Turner - pick #25 in '14 RD - delisted end '22 - re-listed w/ #39 in '22 RD - delisted end "23 - 111gm/58gl - thx Kayno

I don't think Turner has ever been trained to perform the role you want him to perform so it is a bit unfair to judge him on metrics the club never has internally.

That being said, he is ranked #36 of club forwards for average goal assists this year, #60 for forward 50 ground ball gets, #57 for forward 50 tackles, #40 for pressure acts, #82 for Score Involvements, equal #21 with Zurhaar for score launches and #88 for Shots on Goal. The AFL claims there are 116 players with the tag of Forward although that is probably subjective.

I don't think he is as bad as people make him out to be, sure he doesn't hit the scoreboard as much as we would like or put himself into a position to do more scoreboard damage at the expense of not just sitting in a hole somewhere occupying space as much, however, we have created our convoluted gameplan because if the ball goes back into the corridor and it is now Cunnington or Ziebell in a one-on-one in the middle, the opposition could pretty much jog the ball all the way to the goal square without getting run down.

There is a lot of s**t going on atm because we have a lot of other unaddressed issues.

Agree but its the same weaknesses that have been there for years now - we just have refused to mix things up - try a different approach.

With Jacobs in there working hard both ways he helped steady the ship - without him its one way traffic.

Turner himself should not be in the best 22 next year - if he is then we are not developing as a club and a 12-16 position awaits.

Was Turner not in our best 22 when we were beating good teams while he was in the side?

We can say he shouldn't be in the best 22 or this and that but the reality is we have played great footy when he was in the side. The question is can we do it consistently and what are we lacking the stops us from doing so. Just saying he shouldn't be best 22 doesn't explain why we can beat contenders when we execute enough elements of our gameplan, particularly the pressure, the contested ball and parts of the game which either isn't part of Turner's role or he is doing his part.

Would it be better if we had a Rioli-type scoring 2-3 goals a game and setting up countless others? Sure, but we don't have one of those players, when Hall was playing forward he was doing scoreboard damage but when he wasn't doing the defensive things we fell apart elsewhere, we need to slow down the opposition ball movement otherwise our tortoise paced midfield will get torn to shreds on the rebound, we have pretty much sacrificed certain roles of players like Turner, McDonald and others to prevent bigger problems from being exposed. We can't just rip Turner out of the side without addressing other weaknesses that will be exposed. Otherwise we will just be re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, we will just find different ways to lose badly.

We have Turner. He is not going to win us a match off his own boot ever
West Coast have Ryan/Rioli/Cameron
Richmond have Lambert/Stack/Rioli/Baker
Geelong have Ablett/Dalhaus/Myers/Rohan
Brisbane have Cameron/Christensen/Zorko

They all have multiple small options that can kick multiple goals on any given week. We have a hard at it battler who has kicked 12 goals for the season...

A small who is dangerous both in front of goal and pressuring is a must.

This bloke is out of contract I believe and goes through the middle also. He has generated 5 more scoring shots from 5 less games. Similar numbers elsewhere and 3 years younger.

For shits and giggles. Look at tackles inside 50, scoring shots, marks inside 50 and score involvements...

Huh? What scoreboard pressure did Hall apply?

I just wish we had a small forward who would hit a pack at pace with a genuine crumbing craft.
People say Kelly or Tarranto is what we need right now and I’d argue Charlie Cameron tenfold.
There is just no one that puts the fear of god into opposition defenders in our forward line.

Meanwhilst our recruiters pluck Gordon “pockets” Narrier out of WA and he doesn’t even last the year.
Where is he now? Playing WAFL Reserves.
No wonder Joyce’s and McMahon are on the out.

Wouldn't be worth much. Small forward who doesn't get possessions or kick goals.

Yep this. A player who seems to add nothing to the team, hardly gets a possession, isn't a known goal kicker, what does he do, tackles, pressure footy, lockdown player? I just don't see why he keeps getting games when he adds nothing to the team.

It wasn't his fault he was playing poorly under Scott, but he has gone 4 games without kicking a goal and crabbing it up for a highest total of 12 possessions, going at around 50% for efficiency in that period. Not being a smartarse here, whose fault is it?

We dropped Anderson for not running and spreading against West Coast, why shouldn't we drop an ineffective small forward?

We've got no one to replace him. Ideally, Walker plays his position in the long-term.

To provide some perspective, Turner has had more time on the list, more games, less competition for spots, less injuries than Sam Durdin.

Durdin, a tall who takes longer to develop and has been cruelled by multiple injuries should apparently be delisted or traded.

Hall is currently 2nd for average inside 50s, 7th goal assists, 7th shots on goal, 8th goals kicked, 11th score involvements, 5th pressure acts despite not playing since round 6, having played a fair bit across half back and in the middle as well and having played in the worst period of the season where we lost 5 of the 6 games.

He has a far greater capacity to do damage, particularly with his speed and attacking aggression he has shown that he is capable of.

Whats he rank for efficiency? 7th for shots on goal, how many did he kick in 6 games? And 5th for pressure acts doesnt seen accurate, where did you find this?
Not the answer either, probably better than Turner but going forward would need to improve on these stats

Brad loved Turner, Durds Brad hated, we tried to give Durds away in 2018, no takers.
