Boomer unlikely. History says you have to be an inside mid to win it. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cunnington lead North in the BL.

1. No North player will win the Brownoselow
2. The Brownlow is a meaningless award. It's value is only in PR/commercial opportunities for the club and player.
Yep

It has no meaning whatsoever.

The Leigh Matthews trophy is actually a much better award and is received by the player it should be more often.

How is that one decided?
  • At the end of the regular season, each team votes for three players (previously two) to be considered for election.
  • Two weeks into the finals, the AFLPA sends a final ballot to all players throughout the league. Players cannot vote for their own teammates; in fact, the ballots sent to each team are redacted to remove that team's nominees. Each player awards three votes to the player he believes is the best in the league, two votes to the second-best, and one vote to the third-best.[1] The leading vote-getter receives the trophy.

Karma will bite the selwoods. They will have a world of neck problems from looking up at the umps everytime they are on the ground. They make Matthew Lloyd look tame

Much better award then, agree.

I also like the coaches votes system. Would be good if it had more status. Generally you'd expect coaches to have a very thorough understanding of all teams and be professional enough to acknowledge successful role players on other teams.

Blonde hair, a bald head or propensity to go in knees first would hold less currency in this system.

As much as I love Murph, he was not the best player in 2011, and neither was Cotchin in 2012.

As for the Leigh Matthews Trophy - N.Riewoldt 2004 (blonde hair), Adam Goodes (2006) and Gary Ablett and Chris Judd as bald heads (so not counting Ablett 2007 or Judd 2006) have won 4 out of the last 5...you're kidding yourself if you think they only get Brownlows because of 'blonde hair' or 'bald heads' when Ablett alone has had a monopoly on the Players MVP. And then you get guys who admit they don't even watch footy that much outside of what is necessary voting on it.

edit: As for the thread, I'd say Harvey and Dal Santo would be a fair way back on Ablett/Pendlebury/Beams/Kennedy/Selwood, but think Dal Santo is a chance to go 22-25 and Harvey anywhere between 18-28. 30 will win it though most likely.

I'm not exactly sure what your point was?

But now that you mention Judd, interesting that in 2010 Dane Swan won the Leigh Matthews Tophy and the Coaches Association awards but not the Brownlow. Then mysteriously got it a year later when he won neither of the others.

Suggests the Brownlow is out of step with the reality of who was the best player of the year and also rewards reputations - sometimes retrospectively.

Love to see Boomer churn out a big Brownlow tally despite his knockers - been excellent this year, very damaging with the footy in hand. I'm sure he is still ruing that missed snap from 10m out, normally eats those for breakfast!

If there was an award for most kicks in a season for least metres travelled, i'm sure Dal Santo would have had it parcelled up for the 8th year running.

what a load of bullshit. To suggest umpires have a mind set that allows then to give votes immediately after a game based on how a player performed the year before is just stupid.

coaches have inside information on roles and responsibilities so there is every chance they will vote differently to umps. Even then opposing coaches will often vote differently. Doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong.

as for the Brownlow being meaningless, ask previous winners if it holds any meaning.

I love the way people think umps have no idea about football. This view is just so ignorant, and its frightening thats its so common on here.

You're forgetting our propensity to miss out on the three votes in games that we win.

Agree to disagree.

Tell that to Keith Grieg .
Yes because I was referring to the past

When he won it it did mean something.

its a popularity contest now.

I don't for a second believe that the umpires are impartial, don't get me wrong they are well informed but not impartial.

Then you have things like the Judd elbow to the head of Pavlich on the bottom of a pack, but then deemed below the force required. Rubbish.

If the MRP went over Corey's suspension in 1996 would he now be suspended for it?

It is the orchestration of bullshit that has seen what was a the ultimate personal achievement in the VFL/AFL(like when Grieg won it) to become a joke.

Admittedly the AFLPA MVP is not the be all and end all, but it is better.
