Injury update. No surgery, eight weeks.

“Patrick will avoid the need for surgery, which confirms the initial thoughts of our medical team – so while it’s disappointing he will be miss some football, this is a good outcome considering and he will be managed conservatively,” general manager of football Dan Richardson said.

“With the view we can progress Patrick to return to full training in approximately eight weeks, he should be in a position to return to play in the early stages of the season proper.”

He said tough defender Patrick Ambrose is also “going really well” in his recovery from a PCL injury suffered three weeks ago in an unofficial practice match against Melbourne, but the backman remains several weeks away from returning to full fitness.

“He saw the orthopaedic surgeon yesterday, had the brace removed and he’s been given the all okay to commence running within the next week.

“We expect he’ll take about four weeks to build up running volumes before he’ll join in training with the main group. He should expect to have a couple of weeks of training with the group before returning to play.”

4 weeks of running then main training for a couple of weeks. On track based on what they told us last time, I guess.

He'll be back in full training this week:

Both Hooker and Ambrose had been sidelined prior to round one, but the enforced extended break during the shutdown has allowed additional recovery time for the key defenders, according to head of medical services Dave Rundle.

“Patrick is 11 weeks post his PCL injury. He is progressing nicely and is at the end stages of his rehab. He’s got one or two strength areas to target this week but should be integrating into full training with the group later this week too.”

apparently done the linsfrac injury

thats a career ender sometimes :/

my sporting partner did one a few years back, we have never played tennis/soccer since. Hes had constant issues with it
Ended Dane Swan and Ricky Petterd's careers, and when Richo did his in Round 4, 2000, he didn't play again until 2001.

Hopefully the scans only show a minor strain and not a break or fracture. Then we could have trouble.

Tend to wonder whether Ambrose is one of those guys who is not as naturally gifted physically as he is absolutely psychotic, able to push himself beyond even normal elite level athletes.

I knew a few of those guys a long time ago. It catches up and the body breaks.

I only raise it because he gets injured an awful lot for someone who is in god-like condition.

Would like to see him just play out a full year to do justice to how far he's come. He's not All Australian level but he should be widely regarded as a very accomplished defender. That's coming from the position of hardly knowing one end of the ground form the other as a 23 year old.

For sure, really admire and appreciate him. Deserves a better end than a lengthy Lisfranc demise.

If fit he probably would have been ahead of Hurley by now in the real pecking order - the one based on performance & quality not reputation, salary & selectors' good graces.

I feel like multiple times he’s gotten injured in games and I’ve not noticed until he’s omitted from the side the next week.

Goddard said he was the best athlete all-round he’d ever played with, which is a fair wrap.

Apparently the lisfranc injury is a type of sprain.

Moonboot and crutches, scans and specialists.

Prognosis unknown.

Essendon defender Patrick Ambrose will await the opinion of specialists after suffering a foot injury in the club’s scratch match against Carlton on Saturday.

Head of medical services David Rundle said the 28-year-old sustained a Lisfranc injury - a sprain of the mid-foot.

“Pat got his foot caught in a contest and has sustained a Lisfranc injury which is essentially a sprain of the mid-foot,” Rundle said.

“He’s currently in a boot and on crutches and we have more scans to investigate this further. We’ll get the opinions of specialists, so the prognosis remains unknown but it's likely he’ll have a period of unloading to allow those ligaments to heal.”

Dont think it's a sprain, think it's fractures of the small bones in the middle of the foot.

Edit: well efc say it's a sprain.. Ill believe a trained doctor !

Is it similar to the navicular?

I'm just going in what my mate used to whinge to me about....his doctor diagnosed him with a sprain which didn't heal, 6 months later he gets reassessed as linsfranc inj, reckins there were little micro fractures in the the little bones in the middle of his foot, he could either get a little plate screwed along the bones which sometimes works or let it heal and forget playing sports again..

But we talking a mug amatuer here , not an elite athlete with the best medical practitioners at his disposal!
