17. DION PRESTIA

(Calder Cannons, 18, 174cm, 82kg)

What's not to like about this kid? Had some hamstring problems mid-year but came back to play some great finals footy. Wins the ball, has some pace off the mark and is powerful, with a nice sidestep in traffic, a thumping kick that he uses well and a very direct game: he takes off and goes for home.

Where will he be picked?

In the mix for Essendon, Gold Coast and Melbourne early on. Could slide, but only as far as St Kilda.

What is it with the old people crowd and having a thing against small players?
I'm not old and I have nothing against small players, Foley was one of my favourite players. However small players need something to make up for their size, preferably at least 2 of ball winning ability, speed, evasiveness or sublime skills. Prestia has none of those.

I'm not talking about people who are critical of Prestia at all, I'm referring to the crowd on here, generally older blokes who act as if the fact he is a midget really matters.

I'm 46 ... if that's old, so be it.
I'm critical of Prestia, but it has nothing to do with size.
If a six-footer or a ruckman non-performed as often as he had this year, they'd be in the gun.
I'm not sure of anyone who is critical of Prestia becuase of size.
The same people being critical have sung the praises of Butler, Castagna, Bolton, Stengle, Edwards and Rioli at certain stages, so I don't think it's about size.

Looking forward to a quality finish to the year to hopefully prove a few wrong.
I hope so. It has a bit of Dale Thomas to Carlton vibe about it if the Gold Coast stint have hurt his knees, like Daisy at Collingwood.

I think he is too young to have peaked. Grigg and Houli arrived with less fanfare but around a similar age profile and grew year by year. I have confidence he can remodel his game style into a stoppage-outside link player.
Has a good footy brain and between him and Edwards share the quick stoppage plays. Most importantly he knows how to find the football, which is a lamentation of Sheds' game many a weekend.

Hope he comes back in.

For those that are critical of Prestias disposal efficiency percentage, as a team we are ranked 18th for disposal efficiency and first for clangers. Guess the whole team needs replacing given Prestia should be left in the VFL because of his 'poor' disposal efficiency.

We are also first for pressure acts and pressure points inside 50, total points scored from turnovers, and have broken the inside 50 tackle count on 3 separate, occasions, the Suns being the latest with 28.
I wonder if there's a correlation between those stats (the frenetic manic pressure forward of center) and our poor DE and goal conversion.

Prestia shows genuine kicking talent, at times. I wonder if he is hampered by injury, or is hit and miss. He gets the ball and knows where to be. Obviously has spent the season injured. So maybe we bought some damaged goods. Lots to like underneath, but needs a genuine rebuild physically. Hopefully we can get that over the next off season. Or maybe they are resting him coming into finals, to try and freshen him up.

I see his poor play. But I also see his genuinely quality play. It's frustrating. (Be careful here) Very like Ty Vickery. TV would do great things, then go to sleep. But Dion keeps racking up the ball and doesn't stop trying. I reckon Prestia gets fit and has a preseason he will be a star for us. i'm just worried that he is playing injured all the time. And that is it.

I was surprised to find out Dion is our 5th highest player for the coaches votes.

Behind Martin, Cotchin, Rance and Jack.

SO he must be doing somethings right.
Was just going to post the same thing.

RICHMOND COACHES VOTES TOP 5

Dustin Martin 101 votes
Trent Cotchin 50 votes
Alex Rance 46 votes
Jack Riewoldt 23 votes
Dion Prestia 19 votes

In fairness Dusty takes so many it has to be a logjam after.

But I rate Dion, we even share the same name.

There would have to be, when we played the keeping off game plan where it was measured and controlled our efficiency was up there with Hawthorn. But our pressure tackling and turnover numbers were much lower. I guess its the price you pay.

prestia should have a conscience, realise that he's delivering sfa on return of investment and personally hand over 100 grand per annum (for the duration of his contract) towards the keep dusty at punt rd fund. It's sickening that martin has been getting way unders for years and now that it's time to reimburse him for past services rendered we have a gigantic chunk of our salary cap going to a short plump dud who isn't fit to carry dusties jockstrap.

Give him a chance to have a full preseason and he may be fit enough to carry those jocks!
