Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Personally I think there'll be an announcement in the next month about a 2 year extension. AFL site reported early April that contract talks had just started.
I honestly hope he re-signs. Has huge upside. The issue is some expected a huge first two years. Most times that never eventuates for high draftees.

The same Zak Jones who played 4 and 11 games in his first 2 years, and got up to averaging 10.7 touches in his 2nd year. Also averaged less tackles and marks to that point of his career. Way better. Admittedly I don't know if or how many times Jones was sub back then. Though Dyl has been sub at least once this season.
When we traded him he was best 22 and got 32

I'm talking about the 'hell of a lot better' comment. You're directly comparing a 2nd year player, without reserves last year, to the development/output of a player with 6 years on our list before he was traded.

Granted, we're notoriously nice at trade time, which bugs me, but if you have a 6th year, out of contract player wanting to leave and hasn't shown to be one of your key players (and with attitude problems), you take what you can get.

I suspect we'd play harder with Stephens. If he was actually available, which I don't think he will be, there'll be Vic clubs interested as well (Mildura isn't that close to Adelaide - looking at 4.5hrs vs 6 to Melbourne). That would drive up any price.

That would be silly, don't all draftees get paid the same?
For 2 years. He is now out of contract and would be looking at getting more than the draftee pay. He might think he is work say $300k and we think he is only worth $220k

Could see us taking pick 37 if we are low balling him to get him of the books which we have done before
Why would we be giving someone games if we don't believe in him and we're thinking of getting him off the books? We're clearly invested in Stephens.

Luckily the club, actually most clubs, don't make knee jerk assessments based off a few average or one poor game from kids. I'd be pretty confident that the Crows and others don't see him valued at 37.

Well I don't blame him if he wants to. Especially since its only been 2 years and may not have established roots in Sydney.

That, and probably watching Blakey get gifted games while he sits on the side lines, probably just wants more game time. It's not like he was bad last year, and not many people were saying he wasn't going to make it unlike this year

Yer imagine the assessments from the weekend

Reckon everyone at the club would be thinking soft at one point

Imagine the assessments on Warner from his couple of games last year. Abysmal disposal, write him off, won't make it. Can't possibly improve. Having watched Stephens across last year and this, soft isn't how I'd describe him - but he'd rightly cop a whack for the weekend.

Soft as you get

Squid it
I've seen Mills drop easy marks, must have feared contact. A couple of weeks ago I was cursing Parker hovering off the contest, not willing to get involved, when it's literally his job and there were others around on the outside. Both clearly soft in general.
