Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Dylan Stephens
DOB: 08 January 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #5, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Red Cliffs (Vic)/Walkerville (SA)/St Peter's College (SA)/Norwood (SANFL)

he's not James Rowbottom, he's Dylan Stephens FFS. Why are we trying to make every Swans player the same?
NO one is comparing them as players, you're missing the point. Everyone who is criticizing him is basing it on his demeanor and body language, not playing ability. The comparisons are to our other youngsters hunger for the ball, desperation, cracking in etc. He sticks out like a sore thumb.

Yeah everyone's different and have different personalities. But just like every other God given attribute of a player is judged, so can their demeanor on the footy field. And he is the definition of passive. It's an undesired trait and can be a liability.

Imagine the assessments on Warner from his couple of games last year. Abysmal disposal, write him off, won't make it. Can't possibly improve. Having watched Stephens across last year and this, soft isn't how I'd describe him - but he'd rightly cop a whack for the weekend.
Only clueless people would think that about the great man last year.

I see your point, but Taylor had already began to drop off in his second year. Serong has built upon his impressive Year 1 this year.

I don't think Stephens was a reach, most had him around the spot we took him. If we didn't take him Adelaide would've at the next pick. Someone like Ling was a reach, but sometimes it's just a case of the player not really developing. Regardless writing him off because of two ordinary games is silly, just look at Florent.
*shudders in despair*

If I recall his parents are travelling between east coast games with their caravan or some such. I could have that wrong but they said something like that in their interview recently. His sister if i recall is in Newcastle.

So family in Adelaide shouldn’t be a draw card as the rest are seemingly in country Victoria.
This is why I'm pretty sure it's a beatup by his agent and he's staying. Expect it go for a while before he gets a new contract though

The move by Adelaide was inevitable.

if we lose Stephens at the end of the year, it must be viewed as a genuine failure by our recruitment department.

Take Warner out of the equation & the 2019 draft starts to look like a disaster.

why ? I don't understand this. If Adelaide offer him everything sydney offers +20% why is that on the recruitment department ? He was best available.

Because:

(a) he was quoted in the press as being keen to “stay” in Adelaide pre-draft; and

(b) if the Swans aren’t prepared to match anything the Crows offer, they evidently don’t see him as critical to our build. Which would be a shame for a pick 5.

Having said that - I do really hope he stays. I’m of a view that he’s showing great promise & could easily be a gun in a couple of years.

Im a Stephens fan.

I think I'll coin the term "The Ollie Florent Effect".

A pile on from the Monday experts because the kid is developing but isn't an instant A grade footballer.
Always the usual suspects too.

The "Ollie Florent effect" is already in existence and refers to the hypnotic ability to overlook complete mediocrity and replace it with delusions of adequacy.

Florent run over your dog or something? 😂 😂

Nah, we will be a much better side when his place in the 22 is under significant pressure. He's got too many glaring holes that kill us, even to the point of costing games like a few weeks ago his inside 50 entries are horrific usually.
