Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

DOB: 08 January 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #5, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Red Cliffs (Vic)/Walkerville (SA)/St Peter's College (SA)/Norwood (SANFL)

It would be easier to take your criticism seriously if you acknowledged what he does well, and when he plays well.

Vs Geelong where his 26 disposals, 2 goals and goal assist were vital to our 4 points for example
Nah, we will be a much better side when his place in the 22 is under significant pressure. He's got too many glaring holes that kill us, even to the poont of costing games like a few weeks ago his inside 50 entries are horrific usually.

If that was his good game this year I did pay tribute to it, he had 1 really good game.

You eyed him up as needing five years

Why always flip flop

He moves on no worries really we'll contend
It’s not a flip flop.

He needed 5 pre seasons to be big enough to have required size.

Lamented the pick at the time because he was a project, but even I’m surprised at how little he has shown.

Thank you for the sass on a reasonable question. I take this to mean you’re concerned now.

Slightly concerned at the speed of progression but still expect him to be a long term AFL player.

Just a question of patience - do the Swans have enough patience to see it through or will they cut and run? Does he have enough patience to trust the process or will he throw the toys out of the cot and up sticks?

FWIW, i think he stays. 2 years more on better, but minimal money.

This is the most level headed thing in the whole thread. I agree, no reason he can’t carve out a career, but it’s a worry when a top 5 pick can’t break into a middling team.

Id normally agree but he was 10kgs behind just about every other inside midfielder in the draft. His body type says he'll probably always play lighter than most but the AFL boys play 15-30kgs heavier, expecting results in years 1 and 2 is just silly.

This is Florent mk2 stuff

Isn’t he an outsider with a big tank and good skills though?

Insider who is being taught to play outside. Needs to put on some size. Did not play any reserves last year because of COVID. We have a strong injury free midfield at the moment. Very few injuries for the Swans this year. He will work his way into the team by next year.

I hate the term but he's probably a hybrid midfielder.

Instincts of an insider, skills of an outsider.... but in the body of an outsider - for the time being. Make no mistake though, he's inside first.

I think the club is protecting him by playing him outside. Chad Warner's surprise rise has really hurt his opportunities this year.

If he does go to Adelaide then we have really ballsed up yet another first round draft pick. Also Ling not knocking down the door for the seniors and looking more likely getting delisted.
I don't think Sydney can be blamed if he does go. Maybe it's a sign they didn't do their due dilligence properly but there's always the risk that someone might bolt if you pick an interstate kid.

They can be blamed for not picking "mad swans supporter" Caleb Serong if they didn't back their ability to keeping an interstate kid. Was the type of player we needed as well.

Ah well, i really hope he signs on with us as there is a spot on the wing for him.
