Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Still rekon he's got a deal lined up eldewhere and that's why he isn't playing. Would be a shame because I've always backed him.

If he’s best 22 he plays, Swans won’t shoot themselves in the foot with finals on the line. What would be the benefit in not playing him if he’s best 22? Swans don’t seem vindictive to me. And if he is asking for a trade a good performance may increase his trade value.

What are the odds Warner jr gets the nod tonight?

Try having a look at his form in the VFL where else and you edited it thanks
I edited has to hasn't as it was a typo.

My point that Stephens' form hasn't warranted him being picked ahead of other players remains. It isn't a giant conspiracy to punish him because he might be intent on leaving at the end of the year.

Spot on.

A surplus of talented youngsters means that any of those who aren't in the 22 are inevitably going to attract attention from opposition clubs. You could reverse the scenario and have Stephens in the 22 getting games every week while for example McInerney is at the bottom of the pecking order, and clubs would be looking at McInerney.

Not getting picked every week comes first, then comes the rival interest. Not the other way round.

I also think other players like Roberts, Sheldrick, Corey Warner and a couple of others, deserve opportunities as well to try and establish themselves in the seniors. Even if their form at VFL level is all kind of similar to each other.

You could tell after about 3 games that Sheldrick is destined for a long AFL career. I am still not convinced with Stephens.

You can see the range of skills that each of those guys have but especially the appetite for the contest. Example: Corey lowers his eyes and fires a lower trajectory kick to advantage. He has better vision. Dylan doesn't do that nearly as well, even after more games.

I am hopeful that Corey becomes a good player but he got 3 disposals the last time he played seniors (starting 22, not sub) and Stephens had triple that in one quarter last week. I don’t think you can be giving players games for experience at this point in the season, given where we’re at.

Yeah I don't wanna bag him, he isn't 'that' far away from making it I don't think.

I don't think going to another club is going to change that he needs to significantly lift his intensity. Otherwise, he will have the same problem of battling for games at his next club, unless he goes to North or the Eagles.

I honestly think for his career, he should stay with us and demand his spot in the team. Getting cheap games at North or just going and being a fringe player at a decent team is not going to help his career.

The Chad had about three disposals his 1st game too.. Horse said he liked what he saw.

Kiama Chris pointed out ... 'Appetite for the Contest'
Horse and The Swans love and have always loved this. Corey has it, The Chad has it, Campbell has it.. Its the difference between a talented player and a player that will become a good AFL player.. 'Appetite for the contest' , competitiveness, hunger etc is the key to success at the Swans

Kinnear Beatson said they had put an offer to Dyl but his management were sitting on the offer. There is interest from other clubs. Fact is there is interest from Adelaide. Paul Seedsman retired two days ago. They need a replacement winger.

As mentioned by Kinnear today he has a contract infront of him club is hoping he signs.

Odds are he is gone this time.
Who knows, he pulled the same last time as well but said he never intended to leave. Seems like the kid likes to keep is options open until he knows all the facts

At least this time the PSD isn't likely to be a factor.

If a club wants Stephens they need to offer him the chance to play in the middle, not see him as a pure winger. He wants to be in the coalface, he's said that vocally. Whether it's warranted or not, that's what it would take to get him
I don't think Stephens is in a position to be making demands on where he is played. He will likely have to accept a contract from any club willing to have him and play in whatever position they want him to.

WTF DOES IT SAY HE'S MAKING DEMANDS

Inside voice please bedders, and I was replying to BloodySwan's insinuation that Stephens' signature will be dependent on who will play him in his preferred position. I don't think he has enough currency for that.

I'm not implying he's demanding it, but if a club offers it he'll move there
