Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

It looked like Stephens was going to fulfill his promise in 2022 but that quickly fell away this year. Was it simply confidence? You can develop skills but it’s not so easy with toughness and decision making. Dyl needed to improve in all three. Sad it hasn’t worked out but the club has tried. It’s frustrating that we lose another player under these draft conditions. It’s unlikely we can even get some leverage in trading for McKay.

22yo and probably didnt want his career ended at 24. Cant knock a bloke for wanting security with a deal twice as long.

Strikes me as the kind of player that could be better with a number of years under his belt. He's developed his game each year in different aspects albeit very slowly. Feel he's somewhat surplus to requirements at Sydney and he probably realised that too.

In retrospect he just doesn't have any standout qualities. He's improved but just doesn't seem to have any A grade attributes to speak of, except maybe his endurance. But when you're competing for your spot with guys like Gulden, Campbell and McInerney it's a tough gig.

They dont have to give us anything technically

But they probably will 39 would do it.

If they get bidding rights to Sanders, suddenly 16 comes into play. Give us 16, we give 22 plus Stephens. That leaves North in a superior position with points compared to trading pick 39.

Reckon both sides would be happy with that outcome.

It would also get that pick comfortably ahead of where Cleary could feasibly be bid. While he's probably a late 20s-late 30s bid, someone could call him in the early 20s. Getting ahead of that would be beneficial.

could be a membrey situation

Be lucky to get anything under 30

What they giving us anything to be honest , they don’t have to
We may be happy with a late pick for points to match the Academy kid who’s not been mentioned in the top 30.

From memory we wouldn’t have used a pick in a Membrey trade even if we got one.

Fair enough. Handy player who will probably play every round in a lesser team, but competing with Campbell, Gulden, Warner for midfield minutes.. good luck but not against us Dyl.

He'll be a handy freebie for them anyway, **** knows we won't be able to get any value out of them

North have pick 16, nothing in round 2, then 39,53 ... Pick 16 is only fair for a former first rounder , will probably end with 39&53.

North will probably say heres 53 now heck off

why overpay us

If he nominates North, I’m assuming we no power in negotiations, as North has first pick in the PSD?

Not a good position.
Depends how negotiations over Fisher go. Can't walk two players to the PSD. Also, the Crows had been on the receiving end of years of plundering from elsewhere, they were out for some trade wins, didn't matter if they created bad blood over Dawson. Just depends whether North are more reasonable. It will lessen what we get for him, but hopefully a mid to late 2nd or equivalent.

It is the right move for his career. He'd be waiting for injury or backing himself to overtake Campbell, McInerney, Florent or Gulden, vs almost certainly walking straight onto a wing or flank at North.

I am hearing Sanders will be able to go to North, but it will be under northern academy rules not NGA.

Therefore 16 is useless to them and they can trade it to us for points and something for fisher….

Fisher contracted so can’t walk him to PSD
