No pick 12 slid due to the Academy bullshit and became pick 15.

Pick 15 slid and became pick 19 and was Ryan Burton.

Had we kept 15 we'd never have had access to Rioli.

There are some major disconnects over how last year's draft worked with the Academy picks and the points system. What's more is people are splitting hairs over f*** all.

Sure we let 15 (which became 19) go to Hawthorn, we did however get in 17 (21) which was due in part to the other picks we collected from Hawthorn.

My question is what the f*** does any of that matter?
So pick 15 became pick 19 after bidding.
Ryan Burton is who we could have had then. I'm happy with Jed

True he hasn't set the world on fire
Has caused me to smash up a perfectly good iPhone 5S this season in fact
Never played a full season at AFL level at hawthorn
Hasn't payed a full season at AFL level at north unfortunately.
Give him a full season and then a fair assessment can be made
I understand the impatience - but until then the jury is out IMO

But i'm not discussing the trade anymore as our boards version of the KKK ^ are clearly up and about :thumbsu:
Interpretation: after aggressively arguing that everyone else was wrong about the facts, when the opposite is proven categorically, then I'll put it down as those other people being unreasonably aggressive.

:thumbsu:

Could have all been avoided if you accepted the facts up front.

Don't worry, I reckon if Jed or his family have read this thread they may have welcomed it as a distraction away from the direct criticsm of him as a player.
Frankly, it's why I kept going. I think the criticism is over the top and at the very least, premature. Jed has found it tough this season, but I can see him improving. He seems to have all the tools, it just needs to come together for him. And that's not just from personal observation - too many Hawthorn people rate him highly for him to be a dud, surely they're not all bad judges.

But hey, people are entitled to go hard in their criticism if that's what they think. But if you're going to overlay it with "ffs, we wasted our first round pick on him", then you need to realise that we didn't.

Cheers.

He needs a solid preseason and uninterrupted run at it next year before copping the knives I reckon. Hawks fans hated losing him as they'd seen what he's capable of. I suspect our poor results have turned this joint into the Salem Witch Trials, pointing fingers at anyone and burning them before investigation.

It was Jed, 38 and 40 for 15 and 55.

So the fact is that Jed alone did not cost us 15. It's just not true.

If you want to say that Jed cost us 15 then you also have to say that pick 55 cost hawthorn picks 38 and 40 which is just complete ******* nonsense.
Had a fair bit of inside info during the trade period and just wanted to put in my 2c worth.

The Anderson trade was not done in isolation, it was done with a look at what we could turn the pick upgrades into in additional trades.

The upgrades we got from the Anderson trade allowed us to turn Bastinac into a pick far above what he was worth (17) while also upgrading far enough to snare Clarke who we knew would be gone by 38/40 and to upgrade via Collingwood to get Hibberd who we also really wanted and thought would be gone, the picks we got from the Anderson trade were key into getting Brisbane to talk turkey due to their academy needs.

You can look at the Anderson trade in isolation and make it read however you want (positive/negative) but trading is not as simple as a single trade, and when looking at the big picture we did well (in my opinion) with the entire scenario.

With his injury and prior injury (coma/fatigue) he's effectively a first year player, and he has played exactly like our past 1st years, but cops it because we traded out a high pick for the first time in forever.

The talent and intent are there, just needs to get some continuity and confidence, IMO he over runs the ball because his body is moving faster than his mind is willing to process due to tentativeness surrounding his injuries earlier in the year. Wouldn't hurt for him to slow down a bit and get the small things right before going top speed.

Ha. Rubbish.

Anderson cost us 15.

Bastinac cost lions 2 second rounders (helped from Anderson picks in our favour) and himself.

That's why we got 17 back.

The end.
No. Anderson plus a second plus an upgraded second is what cost us 15. Anderson was maybe half the value of what 15 cost us.

The various picks we accumulated outside the first round had a different, more straightforward and easier to quantify value in the academy bidding system than when everybody just took their picks to the draft. And dealing with a club that needed academy points didn't spring up out of nowhere through dumb luck; we knew Bastinac wanted to go there before trade week started. It really was a case of 3 $20 notes being worth more than 1 $50 note. It took some skill and luck to turn all that back in to a first rounder but it had to have been the plan all along. It might not have come off but it did. We may have liked Burton better than McKay but after Curran, Tarrant, etc we might not. We might have wanted a true KPP more than a 3rd tall type anyway.

And Jed will be fine.

Edit: I see DarkPhoenix has confirmed my guesses with actual info. :thumbsu:

I think people angry at Jeds performances should be redirecting that anger to the coaching staff. Came straight back in to the side after his injury were instead he should of had a few weeks in the VFL at minimum.
But wouldn't 'we' have been angry over Robbie instead.

Indeed. But with Garner, Higgins, Turner & Wood injured - we had no choice but to play him underdone... He's taken one for the team.

Many ill-equipped posters fail to take the larger things into perspective when venting frustrations.

And that's the other mostly unspoken part. We're all pretty comfortable with the idea that Basti was never worth 17; we had to give up more picks/points value to make that happen. Apparently the same thinking doesn't apply to 15.

I'm glad we traded pick 15 for jed. Big risk to give up a first rounder for him, but i think he'll be a very good player once he pieces it all together.

I was happy when Joyce called out "jed" instead of rioli on draft night. A bit frustrated that he ended up kicking 44 goals this season, but jed will be better in the long run.

so did he cost a first round pick or not?
Yes, he did.....and no, he didn't.
He was both a good pick up and a wasted pick.
He has both lots of potential and will fail to make the grade.
He should be in the side and he should be playing VFL.
I hope he his picked for Saturday and I also hope he is dropped....

I'll say this about Jed. He has a f**ken dip. If he tackles you with the ball you're going to know about it. He's one of the few guys we have that genuinely wants to hurt the opposition physically at every opportunity. I'm confident he'll come good long term.

If only half our team had the same kind of mongrel intent that Anderson has

On an unrelated note, if you pay for a beer with a $50 note and ignore the $40 change, you can go around telling anyone who will listen that the beer cost you $50.

Cheers.
on another unrelated note, after using the $50 note to buy the beer, it is gone and you can't use that $50 note again. :)

Well that has just confused me even more. Maybe we could have a round about discussion on each point.

Firstly though, I need to know did he cost us a first rounder or not.
