Best case scenario is that a fit Kennedy and Lang allow Murphy to play a more outside/running role for a few years. I'd like to see him with a healthy body and without the pressure of being skipper.

I don't think we gain anything from him leaving, especially if we replace him with another 18 year old.

More experience to Dow, SPS, Cunningham and maybe JSOS helps too.

Rather than discuss what position Marc could play from here on in, perhaps the discussion is what he should be offered contract wise.

Personally he still adds value to the team given our age profile and what we are developing

I think 2 years at 500K a year would be around the Marc....

I would doubt Murph would accept 1 year offers imo

1 year contracts were good enough for Boomer Harvey in the latter part of his career.
Murphy would have been our highest paid player for some time now but those days are over.
Can't see any other club offering extended years on big dollars so Murphy will pretty much have to accept his new status if he wants to continue.

As a comparison who else is on that sort of money?

Doc is probably on a similar contract. Cripps would go past him as would Charlie I imagine. Our current list profile and the well known fact we aren't dipping into our complete cap would have me believe not many on the list would be touching that kind of money in general.

What have you to prove that assertion, though?

Have his foot injuries been due to overworking him, or rushing him back? What evidence have you to say that it was all due to his old age rather than the strain we've placed on him, playing the sole remaining knight from rattens era

I really do not know why you would think he was done, the season after he just won the best and fairest.
Can't reiterate this enough & this was coming off a serious syndesmosis (yes I googled this for the correct spelling) injury in 2016 which could easily have finished his career.

In the game before he suffered the plantar fasciitis (thank you again Google) injury he was our best player in our loss to Collingwood. 29 disposals, 9 marks, 8 tackles & 7 I50s. There isn't too many players on our list capable of knocking up these stats & this was a week after having 30 disposals, 7 marks, 5 I50s & 5 clearances.

When players like Dow, SPS, O'Brien & Cuningham are starting to put these type of stats together on a consistent basis then Murphy may become surplus to requirements. In the meantime, I am confident that Cripps & Ed will be more than happy knowing that Murphy is still running around with them providing a level of support in the midfield that our younger midfielders are not yet capable of providing.

Initially liked your post, but I'm not so sure about it now.

I'm all for decreasing his wage, to bring it into line with what he's worth to us, but for him to have a ridiculously low wage would be absurd. Also, to describe him as mere depth is also offensive to the player he still is; at what point do you think he is no longer first 22, let alone not inside our top 5 players?

It'd be terrific if, over the course of the next 6-12 months, we had multiple players go past him, but we cannot plan for pipe dreams. We must realise that it's taken until this season for numerous Melbourne players to surpass Nathan Jones; that is a good 5 years into their rebuild, and despite how honest a player he has been he has not reached the heights Murph has at times.

For me at least, do what it takes to keep him around until it is genuinely the end for him, as he's going to be no worse then the free agent that takes his place.

I understand this Gethelred. Comes down to personal opinion and even my preference is to keep.

I really feel he has given his all but was one of those players who played soo much early in his career and buggered his body (shoulder first /now feet). I'm sure the shoulder killed some of his tackling ability. (Controversial here) I really feel the coach looked after him last season for the best and fairest award. Just my opinion.

Given he has paid such a price on our behalf i'd rather not sell him off for minimal compensation. Just let him remain a one club player.

Can join 3-6 others in filling a wing or forward pocket role.

Agree with you and Arrow. downgrade his salary to match his output.

Harsh, I'd be happy for him to be on a performance-based contract that values him between $650-$750k/year.

I'm sure he's close to a top tier player in whatever salary structure SOS is operating.

Happy for him to be on big money as long as it's only 1 year at a time.

700k seems fair

As in he'd want longer? 3?
He said recently he thinks he has 3-4 years of good football left in him.

I'd love to see him play for a couple more as HFF, enjoy his football, kick a few goals, relinquish the captaincy, balance football with a young family. He'll enjoy the less pressure and damage to his body of being an extractor. After all he's been put through, he deserves that.

Hopefully there’ll be opportunity to trial this in the remaining games this season

I think loyalty is a two-way street. How we show loyalty to Marc will directly relate to the likelihood of players showing loyalty to us when the option to move comes about for them.

If we low-ball him or push him out, the players will know that they'd be best off looking after themselves as the club is not going to look after them.

Perhaps this is old-school thinking, but I think it's a part of the synergy that makes a successful organisation... of any type.

Had a dream last night that a mate and I ran into Murphy and another player having some time away during the bye round. Asked Murph if he was staying - he was very cagey to begin with, but after I promised I wouldn't plaster it all over social media, he said pretty emphatically that he'd be off to another club but didn't know which one just yet. Could tell he was a little sad about it.

Take it for what it's worth.

I sort of agree with what you are saying but some hawks supporters probably thought it was pretty harsh to move mitchell, lewis and now that hodgy is continuing on at lions.....doesn't look like it deterred prospective players queuing up to go there.

Is this a read between the lines sort of statement....:)

Hope he does what makes him happy, gave his best years to us and just hope if he does leave he does get success otherwise I hope he stays and finishes a blue.

He's put enough into this club so no hard feelings whatever he decides.

I'd be staggered if we lost Murph...been with us through what has arguably been 13 years of frustration with the occasional finals appearance...he's still A grade and perhaps with an outside role can have a real impact with goal kicking and leadership even without the captaincy....whatever we get for him is never going to be as good in the short term as he will and injury free 2-3 more years of him running round the F50 will be great for us...we'll build the midfield via draft and FA..if he can give us 20-30 goals a year as a small forward how good will that be:)

Nah that's pretty much it! Also dreamt that I was an axe-weilding robot fighting a war against a whole robot army myself. Not sure if that means anything with regards to Murphy...

Loyalty goes both ways, what about the other players? Doc, Cripps, Dow, Would they think that when they turn 27 or 28 they better look elsewhere before they get too old. A good list manager will realize that they are dealing with people not just footballers.
