Has he had any serious offers from other clubs MS3?
Clubs are sniffing HBF but nothing serious at this stage though. IMHO I think his injury issues are pulling clubs away from making a serious play right now.

Murphy's last contract was done by the previous administration and was likely very lucrative. I have no inside knowledge but I suspect he's used to signing big contracts with little resistance from the club, but that's not how SOS rolls.
When SOS took over we were paying out the whole salary cap with the worst list in the AFL and he recognised that players contracts were out of line with industry standards and has begun to rectify it. Murphy is probably the last player to have a contract from pre SOS, and is likely offended at the reduction and duration offered. However if he wants to play in a successful team he needs to appreciate that we need cap space to retain our young talent and land a free agent or 2.
The club has been good to him & I hope he stays. These last few years of his career might not be his most lucrative, but they could be the most successful.

North Melbourne, Suns, Brisbane, Bulldogs would have a lot of salary cap space. Bulldogs lost a lot of experience last year so maybe they would want some experience in the team for two years on top coin. North Melbourne could be another one looking to get some players to give their mids a chop out on top coin for two years. Hawthorn is another with salary cap space after all their retirees. Prefer if he stays and toughs it out.

Based on doc’s comments today about murph wanting to feel valued by the club would suggest he’s been low balled. Whilst I have loved what he’s done for the club, in some ways his soft underbelly has been our major issue for a number of years now. Apart from kreuze, that era is slowly coming to an end and is being propped up with talented kids. Wouldn’t be upset to see him go if we snagged a FA or two

The familiarity of being the highest paid player for many years.
Reckon he's not liking Silvagni's new batting order very much ...

Kruze went through the same thing, he's still at the club. To me Murphy and Kruze are similar in temperament. Not the kind of people who want to change up their familiar surroundings.

Could be wrong, but that's how I read them.

He'd be a great short term pick up for us whilst LDU gets up to scratch.

You couldn't begrudge the bloke looking elsewhere for a crack at some finals in the last years of his career, considering how he has stuck by the blues through thick & thin for a long time.

Been on a big quid for a long time.
Reckon Silvagni has offered the new reality.
Murphy/manager don't like it and test the waters.
If Silvagni's new reality is league wide Murphy will have a choice of staying and accepting a major haircut and relinquishing the captaincy or leaving and accepting around the same wage elsewhere.
So if $$$ are about the same across the board, he may have to decide between finishing as a one club player or trying to find a club in a premiership window right now.

Is there a possibility his contract status was a factor in his return (possibly prematurely) from injury?

I think Sloane is seeing just what an impact injury can have on your value .

Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy that compensation would be a third rounder for Murphy, surely that is BS if Motlop can get an end of first round pick.
Of course it’s BS he’s the captain of the club!

5 years difference between the two players at the time they left/would leave.
