Murphy ready to be a veteran
Murphy has developed into one of the game's best goalkicking midfielders, booting 31 majors in 2009, but he said he now measured his performance on contested possessions and defensive pressure.

This season he is averaging career-best tackling numbers and a goal a game.

"It's sort of changed a lot over my four to five years playing AFL footy," Murphy said.

"Today I'll try to get 40 to 50 per cent contested footy, and tackling is such a big thing in footy as well.

"If you're not doing that defensive side you're costing your side I think. All the other stuff should come if you do that hard stuff."

Average game from Murphy in a terrible team display where we struggled to have any real winners on the ground against a hot Hawthorn outfit who came out to play. :(

Another solid performance and consistency is very good for Murph this year displaying his silky skills on a regular basis. Was great in and around the packs against the Dees and in trying conditions.

Was not the best night for Murph allthough he was solid again the spotlight was all on North and they delivered while we floundered in a disapointing display.

Some rumours are floating around that Murph may be out of tonights game due to injury but i am yet to find a confirmed source so stay tuned and hopefully he lines up as he was selected to.

Well the rumours turned out to be true and Murph is not playing tonight against the Dockers due to some hamstring soreness and by all reports will return after the split round.

Murph looked a bit sluggish last night and lacked a bit of his usual dash, but gee he's a ripping player. Love his evasiveness and ability to take the game on. Will be better for the run, ready to tear into the latter part of the year.

Agree with you here Faz and i hope the lingering injury Murph carried through the Pre Season is not rearing it's ugly head again. I am sure the MC and staff will be monitoring his workload during the week etc to make sure he is fully fit on game day.

While Murph was down a bit his stats dont read to badly but i would like to see Murph's tackles and marks go up as he was quiet in these parts of his game against the Lions. Next week against the Dogs is a big game and i expect Murph to tear it up and as he has a good record against the boys from the Whitten Oval.

I was unable to see the Dogs game and have not had the time to see a replay yet, so i am unable to give a run down of how Murph played but there seems to be some angst within a couple of our own posters asking for Murph to be dropped which is alarming to say the least IMO.

Any run down of how Murph played against the Dogs is appreciated as his stats dont look to bad on face value and are nothing to be sneezed at.

Not the best display from Murph in an all round poor effort from the team as a whole. Murph needs a lift and is not hurting the opposition as much as i would like and seems to be just going through the motions right now.

Big lift needed for this weeks clash against the Eagles at Subiaco.

OF COURSE, Murphy is a former No. 1 draft pick and everybody expects big things of that station.

But I underestimated just how good this kid has been, and will be.

If you look beyond his pure playing ability and vision while in possession of the football you will notice the physical attribute that is easy to miss in a player 20 years old and 180cm.

Next time he is caught with the ball without prior opportunity, watch how far he carries the tackler before he loses his feet. The kid is a powerhouse from the waist down. The strength in his legs is obscene.

Slow first half of the game for Marc last week in Subiaco but came on well in the second half and he was a major factor why we got on top of the Eagles and won the game. Hopefully this form reversal will stay and we will need to be on top of our game to beat a red hot Pie outfit this week.

Terrible game from Murph yesterday. Kicking was poor , Enthusiasm was non existent and i was very dissapointed and a kick up the arse is needed for Marc and many others on the list. We have the Bombers next week and things are not going to get any easier if this form slump continues. Searching for answers to explain this current form and if you take out last weeks second half against the Eagles Murph's form has been below par for the best part of 4 weeks. :(

100 Club is Murphy’s lore
Ever-present in the Carlton rooms on matchdays in Melbourne, John has closely followed Marc’s progress since Wayne Hughes called his name with Carlton’s priority selection (selection one overall) of the 2005 National Draft.

“He’s doing what he wanted to do,” John said. “He made the choice between footy and cricket because he had a pretty promising cricket career, but he’s stuck to the task and I think he’s done exceptionally well. He’s pretty durable, he’s copped a few baddies in his time, but he’s kept getting up.

Murphy, Mark III
"I would like to finish my career as a one-club player as Grandpa did. I know there are times when Dad wishes he had stayed with Fitzroy."

"I had a hip operation in January this year and while my form has been reasonably consistent , I would have liked to have made more impact," said Murphy.

"You miss a fair chunk of pre-season and you will probably end up having an off and on year. For instance I've kicked just 17 goals in 19 games after getting 30 last year.

"As a midfielder I need to be kicking goals to make myself more dangerous and add another dimension to my game.

"So it's a matter of making sure I get that pre-season into me over the summer. My teammate Brock McLean, who has been really good around the club, would be thinking the same way.

Murphy also gives the impression he is looking forward to being involved on a long-term basis with ruckman Robbie Warnock who has taken giant strides in the past month.

"He might have struggled early but has gone to the VFL and worked on his game. He provides silver service at stoppage situations.

"And when you think we obviously have 'Kreuz' (injured Matthew Kreuzer), plus Shaun Hampson and Sam Jacobs, then our rucking future is really good."
Murphy, Mark III

A bit derivative, but a nice article nonetheless.

lets hope he can find the big sticks a few times tonight in his 100th. Goals from the midfield have been lacking this year.
