Would have thought that was pretty much common sense and expected behaviour from a "Club Captain" - however, others have a different 'take' - aka Marc has done Carlton 'favours' by being there'...total BS of course.
I have no problem with players assessing their options, that's fine. If Murph is gonna do this though, the captaincy should've been given to Cripps or Doc.

Out of the whole of this thread, the only thing that I can agree with on the negative side of posters is this. IF Smurph wants to shop around … no issues, but he should, as others have said, handed over the captaincy before doing so.

That is unfortunately poor leadership and would certainly put a ripple through the playing group. Probably didn't think it quite through.

Didn’t Griffen leave bulldogs (at his own request) whilst he was captain or has Bob forgot that

Maybe Bob didnt think highly of that as well.

I didn't make any argument based on money he was or wasn't paid, you missed my actual point.

I will stand by the argument that had he have chosen to leave 5 years ago he would have enjoyed more success elsewhere. He would have had plenty of suitors.

Read my whole post - he re-signed on superior terms, at a time when the club had delusions of relevance. What happened after is hindsight, has no bearing on anything and sure as hell doesn't give Murph any special credits to carry himself like he is this year. Compare Murphy's conduct this year to Gibbs last year and in his 2014 contract year... extremely poor form from #3.

True

Glass houses tho

He's in the media now. And to be fair, he has been critical of some of the goings on at the Bullies of late. I don't think him saying Murph looking at options is not a great look for a Club Captain is too outlandish.

Well yes his job now is to have an opinion ... like us

And like us he doesn’t have all the facts

Don’t get me wrong I like Bob & I didnt feel his comments where out of line

Thy will tell us who has the right to an opinion …..

And they will like it....

Every 1-2 weeks.

Yes I think he was saying it from a first hand point of view

Bob got that gig after griffen left and they won flag 2 years later

Would be okay with that scenario [emoji2]

Hmmm not sure how many Dads wouldn't push for their son to be captain of the greatest club in the AFL; looks good and comes with financial rewards. You are naive if you think John Murphy wouldn't have a say in his sons contract negotiations.

Don't get emotional about it.. just what I was told from a former player.

so;
1) quote/make up completely unsubstantiated rumor.

2) assume that it is completely true and use it as proof of your narrative.

lets be honest its pretty unlikely that a former champion like john Murphy with his knowledge of the game would ever do this.

Who wouldn’t AB

…. it surprises you Mal?

Little guy has played his heart out for this club, often working through niggling injuries from being smashed pillar to post. 2017 was a ripping year for the Skip …. how quickly people forget.

As I said earlier, I respect whatever Marc decides, I will support him either way, because I know he has done over and above what his body (and playing an inside mid role), has allowed him.

Two times BnF, been with us through some utterly shit times (like pretty much his whole career), captained the club in trying circumstances, has given over 10 years service, has done everything you could ask from a player, has literally bled for the club, has had broken bones for the club... and the shit in this thread gets posted.

Some of you should hang your heads in shame.

Its a shit time for all of us and the club is at a low. Lets be better than this.

Amen

Getting sick of this crap line. Sure he might not be the most inspirational leader but he's always put his body on the line for the club so for people to question his courage is garbage.

You genuinely think Marc Murphy is a courageous leader? Every player puts their body on the line mate, that's a requirement of AFL football. Marc doesn't inspire other players on the field with how he plays. Perhaps that's a better way of putting it.

so we have gone from "rumor has it" into an actual conversation that you had with a former player.

You do realise that the captaincy is decided by a vote by the playing group and not representations from players fathers?

Emotional about it?

Whilst I’ve akways loved murph, his recent actions have swayed my thinking a bit. In a way, until we get rid of that soft underbelly (that he’s been apart of), I don’t think we’ll truly move forward. Leave that to Crippa, doc and the kids

I am disappointed this thread has been given air. So much reading innuendo into just about anything. Mark is now a price taker rather than a price maker with regards to his contract, and we know SOS is a real tight-ass. No doubt SOS has reeling in MM's contract as a major objective , particularly with the chase for the big fish and the Cripps/curnow contracts. Space has to be found somewhere.
Of course MM is not going to come out and outright say , " I am a blue bagger for life " when in the midst of negotiations. Just about the most neutral way of negotiating in the current circumstances is the old weighing up the options. It's not a statement of intent to leave, more a tactic to put SOS on the back foot a little. At least thats my opinion.

This is it. If you're a captain for the right reasons then it's a no brainier.

Wow. This is a tad dramatic. It's just a football game after all. Hanging your head in shame is reserved for slightly more serious personal events in which you've done wrong, not dissing Marc Murphy from the cfc.

Except they don't. Some players spend their whole careers skirting packs and never putting their body truly on the line. Murphy has sustained some of the injuries he has because he put his body into the contest and into situations where he could come off second best.

We can't say he doesn't inspire others because we aren't part of that playing group. There's not a Captain in the league that could lift this squad to anything special given the talent that's been on it in the time he's been Captain.
