The board made the decision to make Murphy captain. The voting system come in with Bolton.

so we have gone from "rumor has it" into an actual conversation that you had with a former player.

You do realise that the captaincy is decided by a vote by the playing group and not representations from players fathers?

Emotional about it?

Two incidents changed Murphys career.

The collision with Dangerfield where he hurt his shoulder and the other with Hodge, where he fractured his cheekbone. Both happened after his MVP season; Murphs been a different player since, especially when he approaches the ball.

He is still a required player at Carlton, definitely in our best 22 & SOS will be trying to keep him.

Except they don't. Some players spend their whole careers skirting packs and never putting their body truly on the line. Murphy has sustained some of the injuries he has because he put his body into the contest and into situations where he could come off second best.

We can't say he doesn't inspire others because we aren't part of that playing group. There's not a Captain in the league that could lift this squad to anything special given the talent that's been on it in the time he's been Captain.

i think his time away from the game has made us forget a few things. both his importance to the team, and conversely some of his play (things like a propensity to give out those handballs to someone in a worse position). in the short term he's of benefit to us, we need his ball winning ability and pace. definitely a place for him in the team. but i feel i can say as he's the one looking at his options and i'm just a random pundit on the internet... he won't get the value he would have gotten 2-3-4 years ago. age, injury, and perhaps the way he plays as a result of those jarring collisions he's had have caught up a little.

Cheers for completely overlooking the syndesmosis, his shoulder being utterly wrecked in his rookie season, and him dislocating his shoulder at the end of the 2015 season. I mean, he missed one game after breaking his cheekbone. Might be time to head back to the corkboard and red yarn with your theories.

I've certainly be stern on Marc in his early days as captain, but that lasted all of a couple of months because he just kept lifting his performances. Unfortunately, the team has rarely gone with him. Hopefully SOS is able to do something about that and Marc is reasonable about the final few years of his footy career in terms of his earnings.

I'd like to apologise. I said Murphy was a pathetic captain last week. I'm sorry. I am disappointed and concerned about the way it's playing out, but I crossed the line. I bleed navy blue. I'm obsessed. Every week is an emotional roller coaster at the moment. Again, sorry.

Out of the whole of this thread, the only thing that I can agree with on the negative side of posters is this. IF Smurph wants to shop around … no issues, but he should, as others have said, handed over the captaincy before doing so.

That is unfortunately poor leadership and would certainly put a ripple through the playing group. Probably didn't think it quite through.

100% accurate. Fine to shop around, but as captain? You just have to resign to do so.

What annoys me with Murph is after the Freo game when the heat was on, our captain was talking about his contract. We really needed our captain to drive home the message that we're on the right path. Free agency is his right to explore but it wasn't a good look from our captain.

It’s mid year he has the right to ensure his contract is mutually suitable
By all accounts he is working hard behind the scenes with the young guys ...we’ll according to Bolton

Cmon Bob ... ease up

Fair point, but would love him to come out and say I'm staying, just working though the fine points.

Yes true it would be good, but the media have to bang in about something unfortunately

This is most likely Murph's final contract and he is wise to be certain about his family's future.

Sure he could have agreed to rolling 1 year contracts like Simo but Simo is not Marc.
I believe that his time as captain is over and should not be a consideration, just because you are not captain does not stop you from being a leader.

So Marc take your time and re-sign.

He has captained for 5 years so not sure it would be related to him losing captaincy.... most likely it is related to contract being offered..money and number of years...

Factoring in all the key points re probable handover, $$ , years offered and Carlton,s inevitable rise it’s a tough one for murph . I hope he stays. Great article by Bob .
