Toast 3 Port players in AA squad (Wines and Aliir selected in 22)

Victorian based players get in on their names, interstate players like Boak and Andrews become victims of their own high standard.
If Boak was in Victoria he would have done enough for the squad.
Every year, I see these claims of "Vic bias" with the All Australian team. But it never stands up to any sort of scrutiny.
If anything, the Victorian teams have been under-represented down the years.

10 of the 18 clubs are from Victoria (56%)... 8 clubs are from outside of Victoria (44%)

4 selectors from Victoria: Ling, Richo, Riewoldt, KB
4 Non Vic: Tredrea (SA), Jakovich (WA), Jude Bolton (NSW), Chris Johnson (QLD)

2021 squad:

Port: Wines, Aliir, Amon
Brisbane: Cameron, Rich, McCluggage, Zorko, Lyons
Sydney: Franklin, Mills, Papley, Parker
Giants: Greene, Hopper
West Coast: Naitanui
Fremantle: Mundy, Darcy
Gold Coast: Miller
Adelaide: Laird, Seedsman

20 players from non-Vic clubs in the squad (50%)

Melbourne: Oliver, Petracca, Gawn, Lever, May, Salem, Fritsch
Geelong: Stewart, Hawkins
W Bulldogs: Bontempelli, Macrae, Dale
Essendon: Merrett, Parish, Stringer
St Kilda: Steele
Richmond:
Carlton: McKay, Walsh, Weitering
Hawthorn: Mitchell
Collingwood:
North Melbourne:

20 players from Victorian clubs in the squad (50%)

Funny thing is, I reckon only Miller, Wines, Aliir, Greene, Naitanui and maybe Rich & Laird should make the 22
Cameron and McCluggage would be borderline chances at best. Maybe they'll both get in to avoid accusations of "Vic bias"
That's 7 players (plus the 2 Lions)

Oliver, Petracca, Gawn, Lever, May, Stewart, Hawkins, Bontempelli, Macrae, Dale, Merrett, Parish, Steele, McKay and Walsh all deserve a spot in the 22
I've left out Stringer, Weitering and Salem, who would all be bloody unlucky to miss. (Salem is waaaay better than Rich, imo)

That's 15 players.

Fair analysis but Johnson isn't a Queenslander. He lived up there for a decade or so, but has been living back in Victoria for a decade or so, so he sees a lot of Vic players live in the flesh, a lot more than Queenslanders. The Vic bias comes from people being influenced more by what they see live in the flesh compared to on the box.

Boulton is Sydney based so despite being a Vic born and raised guy, he has his Sydney teams bias as he sees those players a lot live in the flesh.

Best example I have, I was at the Gabba the day in 2003 a 20 year old Chris Judd kicked 5 goals in the first half against the Lions and made the Cray brothers and others in the Lions premiership defence look stupid a couple of times. 3 of those goals were kicked right in front of me. I can still clearly see those 3 goals. I watch TV replays and they look good goals, but just don't capture how dynamic they were.

So any Vic bias comes from 4 now 5 with Johnson, Vic based selectors seeing a lot of Vic players play a lot of their games live in the flesh compared to non Vic players watching them mainly on the box and vice versa for the selectors who don't live in Victoria and their memories being greatly impacted by live in the flesh stuff vs stuff watched on TV.

Tredders talked about All Oz selection on his 5AA segment this arvo. AA haven't cut up just his segment like they normally do so the podcast link is to the whole show.

He starts at 38.50 and All Oz selection discussion starts at 44.50.

Rowe asked about Boak and he said he hasn't had as good a year as last year, said he pushed for him, but rattled off names of players in the mid field who had a better year. He says there are players in the squad who hadn't been nominated by their team and some who had. Rowe aks better than Mills? Tredders says but different positions.

Rowe was pushing for Boak in the squad not in the team and Tredders said sometimes there are unlucky people and he's one of them. Then Rowe talks about Walker v Franklin. Tredders sets him straight and asked what about Riewoldt he's kicked 50+ goals and didn't make the squad.

Tredders said they have a Champion Data analyst who provides resources and back up opinions as all 8 selectors push for their selections. Talks about CD guy helping compare players and comes down to splitting hairs. Media award winning players are looked at but don't take a huge amount of notice, coaches votes are held very highly as a reference pt, club's are asked their opinions, says because, then changes tack and says 2014 I can tell you now, Nick Smith from Sydney, gun best lockdown defender in the comp, beats blokes, but media awards, coaches votes and stats, he falls thru the crack, beats Eddie (Leigh Forrest says Eddie said his hardest opponent ever) if didn't watch him closely or speak to the clubs.

"So the clubs put in who they think can make the team. Some choose not to put in anything, some clubs are know to put a million in and some are hardly gonna put any in. So the reality is of this situation is as a selector, it comes to a pretty, and it only got finalised yesterday, a 2 1/2 hour meeting to argue, debate, come to a consensus on a team, but I just find it ridiculous that a media reporter comes out and says - oh well someone didn't nominate someone, and that's why they didn't get in, well do you think that's going to be the case?? (Looking at you Tom Morris and your tweet) Give me a break."

Then Tredders goes on how about every member of this panel doesn't get a cent to do it. Do it for the game. to try and give back. Rowe - oh you get tickets or something surely, Tredders goes off - "you get nothing!" Then spits the dummy how he couldn't get finals tickets and only has his AA pas for Friday's QF. They go back debating All Oz, Rowe pushing for Aliir over May, Weitering etc and finish up at 49.50 on All Oz selection.

Come back form the break (which is edited out) and Tredders still whinges about paying for 7 memberships and "get stuff all," re QF tickets, then talks about QF. Gets stuck into Marshall and Spurrier about low crowds for finals no GF in SA because of them. Finished up at 55.10

Reckon this is the only time I have seen the club use the high voltage lines / Torrens Island Power station images since the early days in 1995 and 1996 when we first used the power nickname.

The 3 All Oz squad members are also the 3 players, our players have put forward to be in the running for the AFLPA MVP award.

Is the virtual event on tonight or next week?

Boak, Mills and Parker’s numbers are identical, more or less.

Parker played all 22. Boak played 21. Mills played 18.

Parker is seen as the Swans most influential midfielder, Mills is seen as having a sensational breakout, and Boak is bizarrely marked down because he didn’t backup literally being the best player in the comp give or take.

Remember 2017 when they found a legacy slot for Selwood in the team despite only playing 18 minor round games, one of which he lasted a minute of, and was anonymous in three more?

That’s the sort of selection we never get.

Why did Daniel Rich look so weird
