3 Quarter-Time Comeback's: VFL/AFL

I remember a game at VFL Park in 1975 - Richmond around the 5-10 minute mark into the third quarter were leading St.Kilda with around 12.10 (82) vs 1.9 (15). Around 70 points down and only 1 goal to show for the poor Saints! My dad commented and annoyed a Saints supporter with suggesting that the Tigers goals should only be counted as behinds to make the game more exciting.

Then the Saints went berserk and went on to win 14.18 (102) to 13.12 (90).

At 3 quarter time when the Saints supporter went for a beer my dad said quickly boys we need to sit somewhere else..

Anyway, because there was only 4 goals in it after the third quarter, this game gets overlooked as one of the greatest comebacks.

Wow! Just looked up the game. A pretty strong Tigers side with lots of experience. What happened? Must’ve been the final nail in Hafey’s coffin that year.

Dogs 40 down I believe in 99 vs crows and won

Maybe 38 points saints vs Swans 1994

Roos vs swans 2003 perhaps can't remember the margin
Good nominations here.

1.
WB were the comeback Kings under Wallace, especially between 1999 to 2000. Perhaps a tad of irony in that, in the last ever game coaching the WB, he almost pulled off the third greatest ever comeback of all time. Nathan Brown ran into an open goal to give the WB the lead late in the game, only for the umpire to call it back believing there was no advantage. His teammate had the set shot and missed. Carlton won by two points.

2.
That Saints comeback remains the greatest ever comeback of all time, IMO, based on margin and time. 47 points down with 11 minutes of playing time remaining. Plugger went nuts on Mothers Day. It was the same match where he famously shirt fronted Peter Caven and received an eight week suspension.

3.
I'm happy to be corrected here... Was the NM comeback on the night a Sydney official passed away which Channel 7 broadcast at 3/4 time? There were suggestions the news rocked them and led to the comeback victory, but it was later revealed the players weren't told about the death until after the match.

Melbourne v WB (reluctantly) in 2005 is worthy of a mention.

Penultimate round of the season, 9th v 10th & both teams equal on points with the three teams directly above them on the ladder. The winner of this match is likely to play finals, the loser unlikely to play finals.

WB 22 points up at the 18th minute mark of the final term and with momentum. Play was stopped for a couple of minutes due to an injury. Melbourne then turn the momentum their way with a succession of quick goals, before Jeff White gets an interesting free kick against Wayde Skipper 45m out late in the game to kick the match winning goal.

Melbourne make finals, WB miss.

We still managed to finish third. Beat both our arch rivals Collingwood and Carlton in the finals.

1976 was Hafey’s last year, we had a poor season. But to sack Hafey was a mistake.

But back to that game, we sat in the crowd stunned that the Tigers had no way of stopping the Saints rampage. Looked like the ol’ wrestler Hulk Hogan hulking up.
