They also have a history of zero premierships -
nobody gives a shit what Freo says.

yeah that may be true...but Lyon has transformed that club in 12 months..on and off the field.

They are a far more attractive place to go to for young W.A players now who are thinking of going 'home'.

I'll be spewin if he goes..but if he decided to back to Perth I'd understand and get over it pretty quickly.

We're not going to get either. I know that he is an Essendon boy, but he's not the one making the calls on trades. He is a good prospect and I rate him, but he not a sure thing.
More just joking/mucking around with that call. I wouldnt do that if i was freo. Its still hard to know what his value is.

Maybe I'm reading too much into what he's saying. He could have said couple of weeks, and they do have a history of pushing players into to the PSD.
Reading too much into it as Melbourne or the Dogs would jump first in the PSD.
They are waiting on Gumbys decision and who we may be interested in.

It Broughton or even Higgins were offered I really wouldn't hesitate. Broughton in particular would be a big pick-up and given Gumby's injury concerns we could really make off like bandits. But both seem highly unlikely.

Would Broughton really be that big a pick up?

He is a 26 year old defender who is going to struggle to force his way into our best side (not that he isn't a good player). For example, how much better than Baguley is Broughton?

I don't see how trading out a depth KPP for a depth small defender is that big a win. Obviously Broughton is more durable but there have to be better reasons than that to go to the effort of bringing someone onto the list into a role that if you include Dyson and Baguley is hardly in need of depth.

Hurley could be the FB/CHB of the next decade.. if he can be replaced up forward then he will dramatically improve our backline.
Or, Hurley is our best CPF option by the length of the Flemington Strait. When we take him out of the Forward line we look limp. Between Pears, Hooker, Carlisle, Davis, 2 need to step up. Carlisle is already there IMO and both Pears and Hooker are capable and have upside. Davis is an unknown quantity. Further to this, Hardingham has the ability to play tall and in particular, provide sensational 3rd man up support.

Over the next few years, we'll have opportunity to trade and bring in a 'good enough' CHB if neither Pears or Hooker work out.

People pigeon holing Broughton as a small defender are selling him short imo, he's def capable (and shown) he can be a high volume possession mid as well as being a really good small defender/rebounder. Super flexible player who's been thrown all around the ground out of necessity the past few years.

Broughton would walk into our best side unless he's injured. Has the flexibility to play both back and through the midfield and has performed well in both roles. He's spent a lot of time as a lock-down defender in 2012 but he has shown that he can be a valuable contributor through the middle and can pick up 20 to 25 touches a game. He would give us a lot of options and could provide a pretty significant upgrade over Dyson, Lonergan and Baguley, or even the likes of Hocking and Myers.

I'm not being a smart arse but do a best 22 including Broughton and list the first 5 or 6 exclusions.

Just curious to see where he fits in.

I don't know a whole lot about Broughton except for this suggestion that they would consider him in a trade for Gumbleton. It doesn't exactly scream best 22 material to me.

FB: Fletcher, Hooker, Hibberd
HB: Dempsey, Carlisle, Broughton
C: Goddard, Watson, Stanton
HF: Zaharakis, Hurley, Jetta
FF: Crameri, Ryder, Davey
R: Bellchambers, Howlett, Heppell
IC: Myers, Hocking, Melksham, Browne / Kavanagh

Pretty hastily done but I don't think I've made any obvious mistakes. I see him directly replacing Hardingham and playing on a half-back flank. He would spend some of his time there and some replacing Goddard / Heppell throughout the middle (to the extent that such positions are really relevant in today's game). In terms of the pecking order I'd have him ahead of at least the four players on the bench and then there are those who miss out such as Hardingham, Lonergan, Dyson, Lovett-Murray and Reimers.

Fair enough.

I'm certainly of the view that we ultimately need to replace Hardingham because we need a genuinely elite kick back there and he is probably the lowest ranked small/mid option.

I was hoping it would be Pears but if Broughton is good enough then it could be worth while.

Good call, would love to see Pears playing that role – hopefully he can get back to some form.
