I'm not being a smart arse but do a best 22 including Broughton and list the first 5 or 6 exclusions.

Just curious to see where he fits in.

I don't know a whole lot about Broughton except for this suggestion that they would consider him in a trade for Gumbleton. It doesn't exactly scream best 22 material to me.
B: Hibberd - Carlisle - Fletcher
HB: Dempsey - Hooker - Hardingham
C: Stanton - Broughton - Zaharakis
HF: Jetta - Gumbleton - Winderlich
F: Davey - Ryder - Crameri
R: Bellchambers - Watson - Goddard
I: Myers - Howlett - Heppell
S: Hocking

Melksham/Browne/Davis/Daniher/Pears/Colyer/NLM etc.

I see you've solved the Hurley back or forward decision. :p

Only way I'd consider Broughton if it was paired with our second round and you threw in Pears to go with Gumby...which most of you will hate. :)

Agreed. Do you know why Ross is treating him like a mediocre player, giving him negating roles and keeping him out of the midfield?

He played a lot early midfield, but we were struggling to score and struggling a bit middle. He got put forward as the defensive HFF and Deboer went in with Lower, then Mundy got fit and Fyfe came back (not exactly at the same time, but you get the idea). We got some clearances, stemmed the tide midfield, but also Broughton scored some goals. Also with Fyfe and Mundy unfit, we were a bit samey in the guts I reckon, if you added Greg in there too.

Then he got injured (finger and missed last 8 or so games.

It seems like that is the case, but the fact that Harvey and Lyon have pretty much done the same thing to him makes me think there's some other reason for it. Is it his tank? Is he not great defensively as a midfielder?

Only real weakness is he's one paced. So if you have a midifeld of largely one paced players???? Lower, Mundy, De Boer, Crowley etc are not exactly quick

Yeah, that's fair. I rate him very highly indeed, and tbh higher than Lower and De Boer from your list there. I hope he does find a new home and I can pick him in DT for about the 8th time in 4 or 5 years and not get burnt this time...

Boy 'o' boy people will through up anyones name wont they just to trade Gumby. I for one would'nt go near that and would rather hold onto him. If he demanded to go to Freo I still would'nt go near Broughton, I would rather try and get a deal for Hill...........but thats not gonna happen!

At what point did Freo acquire a midfield that is so good that they can trade a guy who would be a starting centre in our team (now featuring Goddard) in exchange for Gumbleton, being a guy who is a completely unknown quantity.

This is where I'm digging my heels in. If Broughton is that good he is not part of the Gumby trade unless we can send them something of equivalent value with Gumby being the filleting knife.

I don't know if he's necessarily ahead of Myers, Howlett and Heppell in particular, but my point was to emphasise that he's a midfielder. I also think he'd be a really important addition if we could manage it, as he's a strong clearance player (both as an extractor and as a linkman) with good skills. I think him and Goddard would, without exaggeration, make our midfield A-grade overnight.

I don't want to lose Gumby at all, and pick 21 or 16 don't really interest me, but Broughton would be one thing that'd get me interested.

Broughton is way too small to be an inside midfielder. There is a reason why the depleted fremantle onball stocks didnt pick him to play there more than about a week.

Hes better down back, shutting a player out of the game. He will get murdered by big bodies such as Kennedy, ROK, Pendles, Swan ect

The only reason he plays in the midfield is as a pure tagger for me.

Well that's just confirmed my belief that he's definitely a midfielder.

Baguley is no better than Henry Slattery, who I defended every bloody week on here.

Give it time, people will be turning on him.

Broughton's a massssssiiiiiiiiivvvvvve upgrade.
James Hird and/or TRB CLEARLY disagrees with this, as do I - Baguley is an instant upgrade on Slatts, and unlike Hank he didn't take 8 or so years of investment to get to the level he's at.

Naturally I agree that Broughton is an upgrade on either of them, however I don't want to see us trade him in for Gumby.....the balance of our list is not improved by swapping Gumby and Broughton (although obviously if Gumby is wanting to leave then we take what we can get to a degree).

Really interesting how this one ends up playing out...obviously the club has reservations on Gumby, but while we're in the "off the top of my head best 22 mode", fwiw I've got him in my best side, ESPECIALLY if Hurley is to be played primarily as a defender.

Broughton would struggle to make our best 22.

Not sure what the point of getting another B grade type to add to our list. We already have about 4-5 guys competing for the last spot in our side.

We have a handful of youngsters ready to take the next step. How many more B graders can we have on the list.

Broughton the mid would not get a game ahead of Watson, Stanton, Zaka, Goddard, Howlett, Heppel, Hocking, Myers.. then you have kids like Melksham, Kav, Browne, Colyer, O'brien, Davis who need to be developed.

Just like when everyone thought Carlisle was a forward and i said he was a back.

Im just saying why he isnt used as an onballer at fremantle. Hes not big, strong or tough enough.

For those few that think Broughton would not be in our best 22, clearly have no idea. Hed be in our best 15 close to best 10.

Hed be our best small and medium defender. Hed easily be able to play a wing for us.

Broughton is first and foremost a small defender. His skills allow him to move up, but I would still prefer him in defence.

I'm still not sure why we're talking about him as a possible trade.

Let's make this abundantly clear: Broughton being traded is a common rumour every year, this year first posted by afl.com.au, and has no substance to it. That the rumour has been repeated elsewhere does not, it actual fact, make it more likely.

As a supercoacher I followed Broughton pretty closely this year. In the first half of the year he did play mainly midfield but had really low TOG - every week he had the lowest for Freo except for the subs. He has shown a great potential to influence games in short bursts but may struggle to run out games as a pure midfielder
