Seriously, people need to get around two facts:
If Gumby wants to go then we have to take what we can
ANY player that is half decent and likely to play over an average of 4 games a season has got to be worth it....

Broughton is first and foremost a small defender. His skills allow him to move up, but I would still prefer him in defence.

I'm still not sure why we're talking about him as a possible trade.

Let's make this abundantly clear: Broughton being traded is a common rumour every year, this year first posted by afl.com.au, and has no substance to it. That the rumour has been repeated elsewhere does not, it actual fact, make it more likely.
Exaclty right forget about trading Gumby to Fremantle we have bigger Fish to fry

so Gumby + ????? = Ryan Griffen

It feels like hes gonna stay to me.

Nothing on afl facebook about him "Going, going, gone" - never has been

Nothing in the trade winds monday edition today - name not even mentioned

Talks about him leaving or attracting attention from another club seem to have dried up.

Would Broughton really be that big a pick up?

He is a 26 year old defender who is going to struggle to force his way into our best side (not that he isn't a good player). For example, how much better than Baguley is Broughton?

I don't see how trading out a depth KPP for a depth small defender is that big a win. Obviously Broughton is more durable but there have to be better reasons than that to go to the effort of bringing someone onto the list into a role that if you include Dyson and Baguley is hardly in need of depth.

I could think of 1 spud he could replace

A lot.

Broughton's durability is overrated. He is good for about 17-20 games a season.
That's majority of a season buddy.. Give me a list of 10 players in the whole afl that last a full 22 round at a high level? In this day and age of footy it's normal to have 2-5 ordinary games

I am on board with the view that, based on his weaknesses and the weaknesses shared by too many of his fellow backmen, Hardingham's head has to be on the chopping block. We need to get a brilliant kick into the mix to compliment Fletcher and/or Hurley and maybe Dempsey.

This doesn't mean that he isn't the number 7 defender and first player to come into the side if we have an injury to a defender. It also doesn't mean that he hasn't been excellent defensively in a sinking ship and influenced more contests than anyone including Fletcher.

There is no better way to expose a lack of understanding of what is happening to our side than to single Hardingham out as a "spud".

James Hird and/or TRB CLEARLY disagrees with this, as do I - Baguley is an instant upgrade on Slatts, and unlike Hank he didn't take 8 or so years of investment to get to the level he's at.

Naturally I agree that Broughton is an upgrade on either of them, however I don't want to see us trade him in for Gumby.....the balance of our list is not improved by swapping Gumby and Broughton (although obviously if Gumby is wanting to leave then we take what we can get to a degree).

Really interesting how this one ends up playing out...obviously the club has reservations on Gumby, but while we're in the "off the top of my head best 22 mode", fwiw I've got him in my best side, ESPECIALLY if Hurley is to be played primarily as a defender.
Incorrect, while he has been on our list less time, he's less than a year younger than Slatts and only cracked a game recently - it's taken him far longer to get to AFL level.

He's over a year younger, actually (16 months, to be precise), but I agree with your point nonetheless :)

Things will heat up after Friday, when the compensation pick are given out. Until then the whole trade fraca is in a standstill, not just one player.

i.e. nobody is going to trade with Saints until categorically it has been confirmed they get pick 13.

Nothing will happen between now and Monday.

Actually it's 100% correct......read again and you'll see that i'm not stating an opinion re the investment, i'm simply stating a fact.

...I said it didn't take us 8 years of investment to get him to this point.....which it didn't, it took 1 (and on a rookie wage to boot).

Hank on the other hand took a spot on our senior list and was invested in for 8 years, compared to Baguley's 1....I'm not sure how that's incorrect??

I would have thought that the only important aspects to the Baguley vs Slattery discussion is that Baguley got a game this year while Hank didn't unless we were caught out by injury on the day.

Baguley is still on the list. Hank is not.

Who cares what went before, TRB clearly rate Baguley more than they rate Slattery even if it is only by such a small amount that they de-list Baguley a few weeks later.

For those of us wanting him to stay, the Dawes deal getting done by Melbourne surely helps....Neelde did say/suggest a week ago that they could theoretically go after Dawes and Gumby, but I suspect that was a smarter line to take than to publically declare Gumby as their next best option.

Clarke, Dawes and Watts is the direction their forward line is headed in the next 12-24months...I suspect that if we can hold off Freo or for whatever reason it doesn't get done, this week or 3 will be looked back on somewhere around the halfway mark of the 2013 season with a sigh of relief and the occasional "thank **** he stayed on our list", greeted by a knowing nod from fellow Essendonians.

My gut keeps telling me that Gumby will break out and become a lock in the 22 next year (disclaimer: the gut has been wrong before and has got a few right also over the journey/the gut has mixed credibility :D).

Gumby should be thankfull hes been offered a year and for the patience the club has shown in him. If he were to leave and go somewhere else its no great loss as we have more than adequate key forward stocks with Hurley, Crameri, Ryder and now young J.Daniher coming onto the list. If we can get a draft pick or another mid for Gumby I think that would be a huge win for us as really hes been the most over rated and under performing player on our list in the last 6 years.

On reflection I reckon 1 year is the right thing for the club to do, so take it or leave it Gumby, but at essendon you get one last chance to prove your up to it
