Strategy 3 tall forwards vs 2 tall forwards

Even a numbnuts like Brad Scott recognised that unless you have a fleet of electric runners (spoiler - we don't) you play 3 talls at either end and you'll go a certain way just having some stability alone.

e.g. park Teakle in the goal square and tell him to mark or neutralise anything that comes in.

Now Larkey doesn't get double teamed and Darling can use his endurance to mark around the ground more.

Plus 2nd rucks actually have to contend with a 204cm opponent rather than pat a 192cm Jack Darling on the head.
yep- blind freddy can see its the way to go

goldy and 2mp will be licking their lips if darling is forced to keep using his energy getting destroyed as second ruck

while their defenders magoo and reid and ridley triple team larkey

Spot on, except I'd probably pull the trigger on Maley if you're going to park him in the goalsquare

Funny how we look so much better with the extra tall

When we already had the second half of last year tell us this too

Sorry mate I don't think it has much to do with playing an "extra tall". I think it has way more to do with Maley just offering more than Darling does.

But in terms of our forward structure, I actually thought we were pretty poor last night.

We were below our usual 2025 average for 'efficiency inside 50', and only took 11 marks inside 50 (same number as last week when we lost to Port without the 'extra tall').

But we look far better structured

2 key targets forward to kick to whenever xerri went to the benc

More opportunities for mismatches in the air
rubbish, it looked shithouse, was literally the worst game i seen darling play, only 2 decent looking entries were zane and colbys running goals, take note LDU!!! Maleys mark was possibly the only contested overhead mark for the whole game and came with what, 2 mins left and not a crumbing front and square for the whole game. ?? all the rest of the set shots were from pack grappling.

Darling should have stayed forward and never rucked and to be fair he had the only match up that imo wasn’t in our favour against Reid

But it created mismatches for Finnbar and zurhaar

Whilst I agree with you that we need an extra tall mate, the forward line was a basketcase last night.
Worst its been all year nearly.

Talls should be Larkey, Maley and Comben. If we could just add a little more nuance to our clearance and forward entry game, then in theory that trio should be a big problem for defenses.

Comben hasn't trained with the forwards, hasn't played with the forwards, and hasn't prepared with the forwards all season.

For better or worse, it seems we're committed to him as a defender for 2025.

Bring back the triple towers?

July 6th, 2013

North Melbourne pull off major upset with 62-point thrashing of sixth-placed Richmond

Petrie was superb as a focal point and on-field general in attack, while Black and Tarrant complemented him perfectly. Tarrant's three goals during a 15-minute burst in the second quarter showed how damaging he could be, while Black marked strongly, showed great agility at ground level, and helped create several goals for the crumbing forwards through clever taps and handballs.

How much better would we be if prime Petrie was as running round for us today? Would do absolute wonders for our structure.

With the Bath joining us, how long until we see the four towers of terrific.

I can't wait.

I don’t think 3 talls works. The game these days is a lot of rebound & intercepting v pressure acts. Too many talls let the opposite rebound quicker and reduces pressure on the ball carrier. Plus zurhaar and Curtis play tall
if you have 3 talls with a combination of quality lead ups and one or 2 that can play shorter/ground ball it can work, but its never gonna work with personell like teacup, souva , darling and ccj.

Disagree

Our form has clearly shown we play better with 3 talls last year and this year

Watch bull and pc have less impact now

Watch the oppo take more intercept marks now which gives them the rebound you speak of

We might get away with it tomorrow but only because McGovern isn’t playing
