Can someone explain to me why they think we would give away a player other than Ryder? Why wouldn't we just give them Ryder and pick 53?

That way Port get Ryder, 53
We get 17, 21.

The stipulations of the phantom trade states that a player must also pass between the two clubs, to compensate for the pick.

Stupidly, it doesn't have any pre-requisites for the player. If we could get it done, we could move on a rookie and not get pinged.

But the whole point of the secondary trade is so we supposedly get something fair, in return for Port getting Ryder.
The AFL has indicated, however, that this secondary deal must be "commercial" - and in line with the value of that draft pick. The value of pick 17, however, is a subjective judgment and it would be possible for Essendon to receive Port's first pick for a player that Essendon is happy to lose.

Didoro was pretty clear that he wanted top end talent to replace Ryder. I don't see how 17 & 20 = top end talent
Sometimes what you want and what you can get are two different things.

And, to be perfectly frank, if we can't find talent with Three picks under 20 (#13+#17+#20) then we do have issues.

In effect if we come out of this trade period with players 'like' Cripps, Dunstan and Impey.. for the loss of Ryder.. you would almost be happy.. almost.

What it does ensure is that the draft penalties shouldn't have long term effects on our list depth.. which is important moving forward.

Whoever the mystery player might be, are Port going to take any old chap just to secure Ryder? They'd be still using a spot up on their list with whoever the player is, so I'd imagine they want them to be ok-ish.

Draft picks are so over-valued. It is so rare you get a player around pick 20-30 that goes on to become a genuine gun. Usually about a 1/10. If we were to give up Hardingham, I'd want pick 35 as well from Port. They're getting off way too easy getting Ryder and Hardingham for 17. If we demand 35 as well that leaves us with picks 17,19,20 and 35. Thearetically as mentioned by someone else previously we could trade 19 and 20 for something like a pick 10-13 which is probably a greater chance of them becoming a gun in the future, leaving us with something like 12ish,17 and 35 which is probably the best we're looking at considering Port won't give up anyone good (Hartlett calibre)
