Autopsy 30 point grind against Collingwood - Rd 9, 2021

Good problems to have though, we've finally got a bit of depth in the middle.

Hickey was our clearance king yesterday. I agree about Warner and Rowbottom getting more time there.. If George is on lockdown patrol against an Oppo mid he may spend more time there.

What a dishonest turd. For years one AFL club president had the biggest footy media platform in the land to spout his club’s propaganda from.

He wouldn’t know the difference between good and evil if it jumped up and bit him on the chins.

You could have said "bit him on the arse" - yet even with a HD closeup, it would be hard to tell the difference.

McLean had a great game. Completely unsure how he replaced Sinkers though?
A) Both were in the side last week
B) McLean didn’t ruck this week, Sinclair did last week

McLean played the same position as last week but did push up the ground more (with Heeney in he was given a bit more flexibility to push up).

Blakey replaced Sinclair as he took his minutes in the ruck. Once fit Reid would likely come back in to play the role.
Good points. My theory was based on the second big body in the forward line.

will give blakey some love, does fu** all most weeks, but maybe an agile second ruck is the go,

looked up and about today, good defence, impacted the game

also agree re jmac

he just parts the contest on the wing and says stuff this and makes the play where others want it out of play
Allir like who we got rid off?

After that weak 1st quarter Horse must have scrambled his muppets to look for any snippets of wisdom posted in the game day thread.

----------------------------------

"Last week we laid 35 tackles inside 50, led by 5 from Buddy. Mills, Papley, Hayward, Warner and Gulden had 3 each. That is a fantastic stat and one we need to be bringing every week. Buddy and Hayward lead our inside 50 tackling. McLean, Blakey, Heeney and McInerney need to tackle more."

"We've really ramped up our tackling in the last few games, perhaps a sign that we're going back to basics more. It's good to see that when we can't get our short kick game going we can still find other ways to grind out the game."

"I wonder if this game will be a slaughter or a grind ?"

"Swans win by 47 points after a huge 2nd quarter"

---------------------------------------
After bugger all tackles in Q1 we laid 29 tackles inside 50 in total, led by Hayward (again). Mclean stepped up this week. Blakey & Heeney laid a couple each. Even McInerney laid one inside 50 and 4 overall.

We laid 82 tackles all up, the 2nd highest for the year. Hayward, Mills, Rowbum & Wicks led with 7 each in an even team spread.

2nd quarter wasn't as big as i'd hoped but it was a slaughter after Q1.

It's all about the tackling Horse. Believe me.

Lesser teams are going to do that especially at the SCG Collingwood couldnt do it for 4quarters.

Unfortunately at this stage the blueprint on how to shut us down is pretty easy.
We've adjusted. If they manage to shut down the corridor we run when we have the ball, pressure and tackle when we don't. We grind a way to win

Blakey still needs to do more , only reason was noticed was because he was at the coalface of the contest

He still needs to get a kick

Hard at it yesterday
Good too see some recognition for Blakey.. The guy certainly has some good attributes - height, very agile for his height, good skills, quick, hard etc etc.
Good to remember he's still pretty young and developing.. and He and the Swans are still trying to work out his best role..
Could play forward and try and drag a tall defender out of defence as he runs higher up the ground..
also pinch hit in the ruck - that's a big asset, may mean we play 2 x key forwards instead of one and a forward ruck...
play patches inside
play patches on a wing - can never have enough players running through the midfield

So basically what you’re saying is .... Blakey = Aliir.

Football is a very simple game we keep harping about gameplans etc.. but there is a reason Longmire keeps banging on about pressure around the contest.

Richmond didnt change a thing against GWS structure wise they just went harder at the ball thats pretty much how the game is and always will be.

First quarter against Pies 5 tackles 2qtr 35 and we are right back in the game.

Nup..
Allir was the 3rd tall / intercepting defender that had to play as the ruck a lot last year due to injuries, or had to play key defence due to injuries. Not often did he get to play his best/preferred position.
Blakey is a high half forward / wing. Thats where I reckon he'll play. If he can spend 5 mins in the ruck and 5 mins inside, then great
Blakey is also 5-6 years younger than Allir and still developing his game

Also rated and obviously a much higher pick

Aliir was a gamble at the time

Nar aliir is a fantastic floater and was a late pick , Blakey was a tip 10 and overrated

you'd have more credibility if for just one week, one game, you could lay off the sniping at blakey ... it just comes across as a bit pathetic, especially after a game such as yesterday's, when he did nothing but good for the team ...
three posts in about half an hour this morning having cracks at him from different angles ... and maybe you think by throwing in 'he was hard at it' makes you sound fair and balanced ...
he's hard at it every week, every contest ... just for one week see if you can not mention some bullsh!t whinge about blakey

Thats not his role well i hope its not he doesn't have the frame to crash and bash but to his credit he still does for the benefit of the team.

Its his 3rd season and hasn't been able to solidify a position.

in those first two seasons blakey was used in several roles in a largely shite team, it seems unfair to constantly mark him down on that ... he's now in a team that is on the rise, surrounded by similarly young, very talented developing players ... his role is still uncertain and he's still being shifted around but his effort and energy are obvious, he's physically still raw, but there's clearly a lot of ability there ...
it's been the same for most of our young players (excluding this year's draft kids), scrambling around in an ordinary team getting flogged most weeks, that can't help development ...
i maintain we will all have a much better idea of where this group stands through the next 2-3 seasons, and the future is very encouraging

Blakey hasn't found his spot yet, and it's frankly a little silly to assume he will.

I'm content with giving him time, he's got the tools and the drive, time is still very necessary for him to grow.

Still looks like a twig out there.
