Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

Do we have any stats on how many times he has got caught with the ball and made a feeble attempt to pretend to try and get it out only to be pinged for holding the ball. Followed by a shake of the head to the umpire unable to reconcile why these same actions on his part have been interpreted the same way by the umpire once again?
Or tried to lay a tackle by ploughing into the back of the opposition player with the result being getting pinged for in the back?

So based on this, Miles is in the same basket? The most pinged player for HTB in our side.

Not gonna get into the grading of players, but I saw Q4 of the Gold Coast game last season where we came back from 3 goals down to win by 3 goals. It was also Conca's first game back since his injury in pre-season.

Cotchin and Dusty were the best two in that quarter for mind with the latter playing forward and creating the last 2 goals. Who enabled Dusty to play forward and supported Cotch in the middle? It was Conca. Didn't dominate but did more than enough (especially a three possession 10 seconds in tight that propelled the ball forwars for a goal) at stoppages and around the ground.

Has a role to play if he can get himself healthy. Hope he does and hope he will.

Conca in my opinion, does his best work in congestion. So good at finding just enough space to get a handball out, and his hands in tight are elite.

Poor comparison as Miles is an inside mid who works inside the coal face where Lasagne man is supposed to be a run with ball player. It's obvious Miles will get pinged more , but he will also probably get more frees fwd.

Conca can play as an inside mid too. He is a hybrid midfielder. Was playing as an inside mid in 2012 pairing with Cotchin.

I don't believe it was for a large amount of time and yes he went in the midfield , but he did very little grunt work if any. He was supposed to be a silky skilled mid which has deteriorated to an injury plagued bitzer.

I don't think Conca is going to be anything more than a solid B+ player, but we don't really need him to be. With the additions of Prestia and Caddy, he slips further down the order, meaning his role is not so much to win the ball, but to use his run and carry.

Personally, he should be replacing Lambert in our current lineup. Plays almost identical position wise, but is quicker, more damaging and has more strings to his bow.

Conca flying for two average games in 2012 /13 barely did this and hardly playing since .
I think Lambert has him covered for speed . They're both c to D graders IMO and taking us nowhere .
Time to let go and grow.

Conca and B+ does not equate. This guy would be in the bottom 30% of players in the comp based on what he's delivered. D grade would be about his rating.

Disagree. When he was fully fit, Conca was a solid B/B+ player. The only problem is if he can get to that point and actually stay there.

D grade is a little harsh. That's one step up from being a complete fail. He has played some decent football for us. I'd have him maybe a C grade. D grade players were those who weren't complete fails, but didn't work out either (J. Silvester, B Nason etc).

Granted this is only my opinion, but I still believe Conca has the capability of being a very solid player for us if he can get his body right and stay injury free.

I can see why others have written him off, but I haven't.

I would consider a B+ grade player to be someone who may poll a vote in 4 or 5 games and put in another 8 to 10 solid performances. This bloke has never got near that level. He has talent but does not deliver. He has fitness and injury issues, has brain fades in games and makes poor decision when under pressure. I have seen Conca at Mooney valley with a moon boot on when he had a foot injury. He was on the piss. His body for a player 6 years into a career is flabby. Not enough hard work put in. Even though foot injuries and hamstrings have held him back from running training, there is no excuse for the lack of definition in this guys upper body. I would question his dedication and want to succeed and would suggest he is nothing but a lazy list clogger. As I stated earlier, I would rather invest games in youth / draftees. B+ ...... laughable

I think Coco has played some decent games of footy. At a guess id say about 30% of his games would range from good to very good.
But when you weigh it all up C grade is about it.
I can see why people want to keep him and im sure he will play the odd game of very good footy but there are so many things wrong with this blokes game and it has gone on for so long it is insane not to question his worth and his ceiling.
So far he is a typical rfc glass half full player that has bedevilled this club for the last 30 yr. Blokes who make you think he could be good enough gives you glimpses of it but never consistently delivers usually because of the short comings in their game,
Inevitably players like this last 7 plus yrs for little return. It has killed this club in terms of success.

I don't think Reecey is a half back flanker...I don't think his hammy has recovered enough for him to be an accountable kick from there..
I think when fit and firing reecey needs to start mid field...heavy involvement and handballs...is his go at the moment...
He needs to get his body accustomed back to the rigors of AFL...and games...lots of games..

Cant say I disagree with any of your summary here but is his body looking any better this year? I thought his arms were pretty well defined in some of the training videos which suggests the rest of his body should be that of a chiselled Adonis.

It's pretty simple, if he can stay fit he's more than capable of being a solid member of our best 22. And yeh some people aren't going to be happy with that considering he was a pick 6, but you need those B-grade types and it's in that 10-18 range where we have sorely lacked depth, if he can get fit and add to that we are much better for it.

Lambert is more resilient. Conca = depth at best and never going to be a B+ player.

As we draft and recruit each year it's guys like these two that will find VFL is there regular gig.

Yes I would hope so.

For me it is what it is and how we make the most of it.

Until the NAB (or what it is this year) comes around then I've no metrics on how we will pan out as a side. Who steps up. What the new inclusions do for us as a team etc.

Enjoy the speculation but on the same account I was really disappointed in 2016 with the amount of players who should have stepped up but didn't.

I'm not ready to call our season until I see how we line up in the pre-season hit out.

Agree. Just not with your first round draft pick
