Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

what were they before the last pre season and the one before that? ;)

Previous pre seasons Concas hammy's were twangy...over-cooked spaghetti like

For his sake...hope they are now 'al dente' :spaghetti:

Yet another baffling player retainment .

This one is more baffling than Maric to me.

Maric is a now backup ruck who's leadership in the reserves will be hard to measure. He may even return better than last year if he is fully over his back injuries.

So at worst he is a backup in an area we are weak.

Conca on the other hand we have numerous people who can cover his spot.

Balmey is definitely confident Reece is staying, 1 yr deal at best I'd say. He looked the goods in 2013 and never recovered from that EF hammy.

big call by Balmey to back him in. Hope he's not basing on the fact that he was a top 10 pick because he has never lived up to those expectations and bottom line is it was a p!ss poor selection by FJ at the time.

Anyone who can't see the value in retaining Conca is being blinded by the last few injury riddled seasons

At his best can be an important player for us - with his ability to win the ball in close, break lines and tackle

Won't be costing us much so more than happy to keep him around if we were going to get SFA for him in a trade

Him and Lennon coming back with their tail between their legs hopefully turns around their attitudes!

Any actual evidence of this being the case. In Lennons case he was a little ahead of himself when he first got drafted given he had spent time previously getting to know the players and was too comfortable when he first walked through the door. But had he not spent time at the club prior to being draft and not felt comfortable would the speculation over a poor attitude exist? Over then that their has no evidence of him actually has a problem with his attitude and commitment. Similarly with Conca with the exception of his body shape is their any evidence that his a problem with his attitude. For all we know his body might just be like that regardless of how hard he works, no different to Dane Swan.

Lots of speculation of very little evidence.

Conca is the type of player we are missing in the midfield. He wins his own ball, but more importantly, tackles as well. Combining him with Prestia is a pretty good decision, as long as they both stay fit.

Conca has some pretty decent traits for AFL level. Good hands, quick, likes the physical stuff, and has terrific spatial awareness.

If Conca can stay fit, he is a solid player. It's just the staying fit part that is the issue.

Would be our Cam Guthrie if he can get his body right and rediscover his touch and confidence.

Load of shit. Conca has had plenty of interest from other clubs in the past and is rated within the industry. Sure hasn't lived to the expectations of a pick 6 due to injury and perhaps slightly less ability than those around him but there is no doubt that when fit and confident he is an AFL level player.

yer right.

problem is we value our players much higher than what they are worth. thats why we end up keeping the same list every year.
true.
Conca is a worth a 3rd rounder at best.
There is always someone that gets taken around pick 40-60 that comes really really good. Normally those are the players that slide because of ridiculous reasons, such as speed, height or body shape.
If we get a 3rd rounder for Conca, then take it.

Conca is rated within the industry?

On the basis of what?

Him living up to his expectations has nothing to do with his hamstrings.

Judd could have done hammy's every two weeks and you'd see the talent he has.

Conca is a very very limited footballer. Can't kick, doesn't kick goals, isn't quick.

If he wasn't pick 6 he would've been delisted this year.

Turned down some big offers at the time of signing his last contract and had offers from clubs this off season. If he isn't leaving and its because of Balme I think that shows that people within the industry rate him.

Article on SEN having spoken to Neil Blame today:

"Balme also confirmed that Reece Conca is set to extend his contract at the Tigers after playing 80 games in six years at Punt Road.

The 24-year-old was the sixth pick in the 2010 national draft and has been mentioned in possible trade scenarios in recent times.

“Yeah I’m pretty sure he will,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s had anything to do with me but I’m pleased he is, it’s good.”

I want to add that it would be a waste to off him for less than a 2nd rounder, and we won't get that so we may as well keep him.

People have been judging him poorly, but let's not forget he came back from a 2011 to 2013 Richmond playing current-Bulldogs style footy, to this chip-chip possession crap we are currently playing, having also had a heap of injuries.

Go back to our better style of footy and he'll be a good player again, IN THE MIDFIELD.
Next time I see Dimma grab Conca, Hunt, C. Ellis, and play them across half-back, I will go and support another bloody team.

well when you say rated in the industry no doubt somebody would pick him up, but they wouldn't be paying anything significant for him. We are talking about a bloke that's been on the list for 5 years and done very little is injury prone and spent the end of this year in the 2s.

no we are not, we have Hammer who had an "outstanding year" and got, not 1 year, but 2 years to make sure no other clubs got to him :drunk:.

Conca has played 9 games since 2013 ef hammy.
So many players that you can put on the list before him.
Swans and dogs groomed lots of kids over the last two seasons and we continue to get conned by these injury riddled category C class players. Bite the bullet and sack him and go for a late pick in the draft. At least you could end up with a fit 18 yo who is fit with good hammies and will cost us s base fee.
So let's see we have now got Morris Houli Reece Maric Hampson Yarran Grigg(s) Lambert ...........all on the list and they wouldn't get a game for the Dogs VFL side simply on the basis bc they're futureless with no upside. Next year is a right off IMO.
