Tom McCartin

Player Profile

In an indication of Tom McCartin’s rapid rise, the young Sydney Swans forward had played 34 AFL games by the end of his teenage years – and that was despite being the youngest player in the league in his debut 2018 season. The Geelong Falcons product has a brilliant marking ability and presents a tall target inside 50, although coach John Longmire has also used him as a key defender. McCartin is the younger brother of number one 2014 AFL Draft pick Paddy, who played 35 AFL games with St Kilda.

Tom McCartin

DOB: 30 December 1999
DRAFT: 2017
RECRUITED FROM: St Joseph's (Vic)/St Joseph's, Geel (Vic)/Geel Gram (Vic)/Geel U18

They know it's bad as it is , the question will be whether he can ever play sport again. No good guessing , it's a slow progress from a freakish knock.
No good guessing, so quit spreading rumours through innuendo. Previous reports thrown around saying it was a concussion, now your saying he was hit in the neck? (The same place Hughes was hit).

Sad news about Tom. At this stage all we can do is hope that the test results are favourable.

Listen , i'm not guessing , just leave it alone. I've tried to give people on here some understanding of what's going on. No wonder I've had this crap on here. I won't bother if that pleases you.

Also credit to the club for the way they've handled this. I know we as supporters want answers and information but the concern here is for Tommy and his family. Not a lot of good can come from spreading it publicly without further knowledge behind them so kudos for keeping it under wraps for a few weeks and respecting what would no doubt be a difficult time for the McCartins.

I'm more than happy to hear anything anyone may have heard regarding anything Swans. Then I can make my own mind up without bashing tbe person who passes the info on.

Thanks Bedders!:thumbsu:

https://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2019-02-27/mccartin-to-resume-training

McCartin received a knock at training three weeks ago and suffered symptoms that required further investigation.

An MRI revealed a concern about possible damage to an artery in the 19-year-old’s neck.

However, further investigation by specialists revealed that the abnormality is something McCartin was born with and will have no impact on his playing prospects.

and

“After thorough investigation, our medical team and specialists have found this is something Tom has had all his life, so he’s at no greater risk of injury than any other player."

“MRI scans can be very sensitive and sometimes pick up things that are innocent and innocuous. That was the case here."

“Tom will resume full training on Monday and we look forward to seeing him playing in the coming weeks.”

Club played it safe as you would expect and bedders source was right about the neck being of concern, in particular the artery. Glad that he'll be able to play in the coming weeks

This explains both the weird earlier update from the club not mentioning concussion or his head, and also how Tom Browne might have interpreted the caution after a knock as being about concussion, and serious enough to imperil his career.

Fantastic news , the club has been exceptional in looking after his health.
Before anyone has a crack , my source was someone very close to his brother.
Great news , the kids a star in the making.
It's all good Bedders. No one should have a crack.

I remember post season I had an aquaintance of someone close e to Langdon of Collingwood over for dinner at my place, (son's uni friend) that he was definitely going to be a Swan upon last conversation with him. He apparently did an about face when the Pies upped their offer. I went with it on here while the kid was still eating my food..............little sh.t!
Tail between legs stuff when Langdon said he was staying a minute after I hit "Post reply". :$

But why did he have to report it. Don't send things out into the public domain - especially sensitive and serious things such as this - based on interpretation. It was pure speculation. At the time of Browne's reporting, McCartin could have been lights out on his career, or he could've resumed training in a week or two. The spectrum was so wide and the possibilities so vast that to just float any theory or projection is flat-out irresponsible and unprofessional for someone with a journalism degree.
