I've really liked him this last season and wanted him on our list.

He's not a bad athlete at all, he plays smart and not with overt athleticism, which may translate to a lack of a faith in his physical profile by some.

He's a committed run and chase player and he should have the speed (and agility) to fulfill this role at AFL level.

His body control and coordination are elite.

Kind of like Parfitt in terms of his ability to 'walk' through a pack.

The Dalhaus comp has nothing to do with the dreads, they are strikingly similar players and project to play a similar role.

They are both grimy defensive forwards who can kick goals.

However, Gryan is the much more natural player and reminds me of Milne honestly.

Skilled, defensive goalkicker.

Prefer him to Kelly to be honest.

Disagree. I think he is the slowest player drafted and slower than GHS. Daulhaus is quick with excellent agility.

He is to slow to be a defensive forward and is nothing like daulhaus. What he does have is endurance and footy iq.

That's your right to disagree!

He's most definitely not the slowest in the draft IMO.

Perhaps the slowest we drafted considering Constable is quicker than people think.

Miers will surprise people IMO.

He is a lot slower than Constable. Slower than 3.2 on the 20m. I dont have a problem with the pick though as it is late and he does hit the scoreboard hard

Very true!

The AFL draft is the only one I can think of that has later drafted players consistently out play the higher drafted prospects.

The NFL has it to a much lesser extent and the NBA would be lucky to have a second rounder (or undrafted) player be an all-star every 5 years or so.

Hayes and Constable are top 15 worthy IMO

Garner, Miers and Kelly all worthy with our first pick at 22.

Should be interesting to see!

This draft is much stronger than suggested IMO.

I prob would of taken big bird so its a even spread one back ...one mid .....one forward.
Garner could of been the new Mackie replacement type.

Time will tell.

Garner reminds me of Shaun Burgoyne.

We couldn't pass on Fogarty at 22 IMO.

I like Tim Kelly but he probably would have missed out if it were me!

Constable is my favourite player we've drafted (Miers is more of a need and I wanted him prior to the draft) but I probably wouldn't have drafted him either.

Joel bloody Garner is that good IMO.

We had an excellent draft but it could have been a great one IMO.

I really like Garner but it’s hard to see a pressing need for him. We already have Tuohy, Bews, Thurlow and Z Guthrie as small/med backs. By comparison we needed a true small forward in Miers far more.

For perspective... he just told me that 2/10ths of a sec makes a big difference - a BIG difference - in the game.

Not 2 seconds... 2/10ths of a second.

Im not sure all the sheep are still in the old timing paddock with this one if you get my drift..

And while I doubt he's slow, lower footspeed with ball in hand and a great footy instinctive mind goes a long way. Seemed ok for Mitchell, Diesel, Chappy... im happy to wait 2 years to see how it goes.

I'm with you, this is not the 100m sprint final at the Olympics...

Miers is a football player and not a sprinter...he's not lame and doesn't need to be sent to the glue factory.

Miers plays under control, his mind is his greatest asset.

Some players who lack smarts seem like better athletes than they really are because they have to put in so much effort.

In the last 27 years of the draft, teams (for the most part) have taken athletes first over 'natural' footballers, it doesn't tend to work IMO.

Miers is like Milne IMO, he's not the quickest, not the strongest, not the tallest...

But this kid has 'it'

Whatever 'it' is.

2/10 of a second over 20 metres is a big difference. They are hitting a good speed at the 20m and would relate to a few metres.

Not sure what your problem is. He would have gone a lot earlier if his was faster. The question is whether his footy iq and reaction times are good enough to overcome his slow acceleration.

This.....and this will make or break Miers. Not sure how fast Pendlebury is over 20...doesn't look quick, yet has all the time in the world. It may well be that Wells has assessed the kid as having good footy IQ and from observation, his reaction times at TAC level look up to scratch.

If he's another Milne, whose footy IQ was high level, we will both be pleased Miers was selected.

How is he one on one and marking abilities? Will also be a huge factor playing as a small forward.

Rips teams apart when given space. Average one on one but had some games where he was completely shut down. He is good in traffic and tends to lose his opponent in stoppages. He is definately a smart player and his positioning for a small forward is excellent.
 
The thing I like the most about our selection of Miers is he is a genuine small forward, not a developing midfielder who’s starting as a forward.
I can’t think who our last genuine small forward is, they don’t grow on trees in the afl.
Milne, Thomas, Lecras, Bruest, Garlett, Betts.
Would take 3/4 the output of any of those players listed and would be wrapped

Garner wont get a game at Port they have about 10 million half backs so i have no idea why they drafted him. He will only make it if he gets traded elsewhere after 2 years.

Hayes i do like but his endurance needs loads of work.

It is a strange one with Garner but perhaps they believe his talent was too much to pass on?

It's a shame though, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle at AFL level.

How Hayes made it to 47 is a mystery for the ages.

His endurance definitely needs a lot of work but bigs take forever anyways.

He's a forward IMO

Bit of a hook foot which isn't common for a right footer but can't be happier with this later selection.

The way he throws it into his foot reminds me a lot of SJ/Chappy...very unique stele or kicking

Hard to judge.just by the highlights package but he looks decent...will be watching his development with interest
