Balta as first ruck would give us more than Ryan. Gawn would just go forward and make Samson look like a schoolboy. OHB too for that matter. At least Balta would have him covered defensively and Noah would also make Gawn more accountable as he is a legitimate forward option.

We'd get less hitouts, but we'd also get less spectating. And Gawn won't take 20 marks like he would against Ryan and/or OHB.

Gawn will probably take 20-ish marks, which is only a handful more than what he normally takes against us, even in our premiership years. And Ryan and/or OHB will have another game under their belt and have been schooled by the best. And getting learning opportunities is the best of what should expect this year from any of our youngsters.

But the callous and ridiculous vitriole against a young bloke running out wearing Tiger colours and trying his guts out, however lower than Dusty-level that might be, gets under my skin.

Ryan hasn't been "opportunity after opportunity". He was given a 3-year deal on a dice roll that a young ruck perhaps takes a bit longer to fully develop into that role than others. He was then brought into the team under-done due to desperate need. He has been given 27 games since 2020 ... hardly a dream ride.

I'm expecting him to be soundly beaten in the ruck this Friday night by the best ruckman I've ever seen, who's currently in AA nick. As a result we will most likely get spiflicated from the contests, maybe even more than we normally do against Melbourne. I've watched Nank and Soldo together get torn apart by Max Gawn. My expectations for what Ryan can achieve this week are very limited, but if he has a crack I will support him, rather than just bag him mercilessly like so many keyboard champions.

Face it, he's totally dined out on us during that time span as well. Anything less than 3 votes to Max and Sam Ryan has over-performed

we used to go through heaps of players back in the dark days that never got a senior call up. if they didnt have what it takes by the end of their first contract the doors that way.
now its the total opposite, you're pretty much guaranteed a career the moment you walk into the joint and not only that you're pretty much guaranteed a senior call up at some stage as long as you can remain uninjured long enough.

feel like ryan wouldve been arseholed after year 4 in the wallace era. the contract extension for him was pure madness.

He now looks like a B- grade AFL ruck. Only gets to play because the decent/good ruck isn't there. But then a lot of players make a career out of being depth. So he is nowhere close to worst ever. More like a mediocre player, who we need to cover for Nank not being there.

Is he the future, no. But then neither is CCJ for North - even less than Sampson is for us .

I like the mad Hatter for the draft, and hope we FA a decent AFL quality ruck for the next 4-5 years. Probably Ryan will stay as depth - meh.

ridiculous comment, 6-8 worse than him in our last game for starters and it's only about Ryan's third game in 12 months he has been injury riddled and underdone. hopefully we play 2 rucks and sammo doesn't have to go it alone against goat gawn. ive seen michael laffy, webberly and rucks like trent noble, andrew browne, angus graham. 2 years ago we had high hopes for the kid i'm giving him until nank comes back to show us what he's got.

There are plenty of dud rucks on the books across the AFL these days, and it’s not uncommon for a club to trade multiple picks and pay big dollars for rucks who don’t live up to the hype. I don’t know why that is, but you don’t need much talent if you’re 6’8” and willing to give the AFL a go.
