Big Sam is only roughly 16 months younger than Coleman-Jones. So in Ryan’s first year with us he is actually older than CCJ was in his second year, 2019, when he was decent in our VFL flag. In fact when Ryan played his first VFL game for us, he was older than Coleman-Jones was in that 2019 VFL Grand Final.

It has been reported the club is trying hard to keep Coleman-Jones and I think that is the right thing to do. Having said that I think Ryan looks a terrific prospect, but remains multiple years away from being able to compete well with AFL rucks and key position players.

If Sampson Ryan is a few years away from competing at AFL level then that is perfect. Ryan has missed out on two years of full development especially at VFL level. One of our greatest strengths over the past five years, has been our ability to develop our squad, playing our game plan at VFL level.

Players have been able to learn how to play in position and link up with other lines. When all of your development is playing against more experienced players than you and always playing second fiddle to them, that is terrible for your confidence and ability to learn your craft in a real-life situation.

Ryan has more attributes than CJ. He's has all the marking capabilities and footskills but is far better at ground level and seems to have more football smarts. This will be great for Ryan and I'm really excited than CJ kindly game us a 2nd round pick and cleared the way for a future talent to come through and become another cult figure at our great club.

I don’t think Ryan is anywhere near as strong an overhead mark as Coleman-Jones at this stage.

Fair enough given he's still only 20 years old, CCJ has a couple of years on him

CCJ is just 16 months older than Ryan.

I see Coleman-Jones as a better player and possibly a better prospect. He is a better contested mark, but Ryan is taller, has better kicking skills and better recovery and ground skills. What will be interesting with Ryan is if he can put on the strength required to compete with the strong bodies a AFL level.

Nankervis, Soldo, Colina, Ryan doesn’t seem a bad ruck contingent with possibly Nyuon, Balta or Miller as options if a 2nd ruck/3rd tall forward if needed. It allows the club to get on with the job of looking for specialist key forwards and backs, rather than trying to fashion things around 200cm hybrid ruck types.

If you need to be that specific, then it's actually over 18 months difference, still close enough to 2 football seasons if you ask me
Especially given CCJ has had 4 years on an AFL list, drafted as soon as he was eligible, developing in full VFL seasons, winning a VFL flag, much more time in an elite pathway
Samson was undrafted, played in Qld, drafted to Richmond for one year in the middle of a pandemic so wouldn't have even had 1 proper preseason yet
Given they had fairly similar results at VFL level in 2021, I think Ryan will be ahead of where CCJ is now after another 2 years

Yes sorry 18 months is correct. Still, Ryan is in the next year’s draft intake after Coleman-Jones, so they are not as far apart in terms of maturity as the 3 years between the drafting of one and the other suggests.

To me they both look decent AFL prospects.

Can't really blame CCJ in a way.
If Ivan returns next year, CC would only be be getting a few senior games again, maybe 7-8 in a season.
He is probably fed up and wants 15-16 senior regular games per year.
Certainly, we need to secure Samson, Miller, Col as project players.
We have the four vacancies on the list now which is good and sets up for an historic draft.

Oh yea that’s tin tacks mate , being in the AFL environment is really when the development starts not an extra candle on the birthday cake and a serve of Chinese take away , but some may see it differently 😗

I’ve always said the danger of losing young players is never money , it’s opportunity , it’s fair to say he’s still concerned given the club has ID soldo as our choice ruck

Crisis creates opportunity. Whilst his first game was a wash they say he's got a nice competitive streak about him.

Really excited to see how Samson goes with a few more opportunities now.

Got a good vibe about our SR...more so than CCJ even after his 4 years in our system...
From the TV footage I have seen of both SR 'smoothness' in motion impresses me more than CCJ's 'clunkiness' across the ground considering the lack of development SR has had...For me it's all about SR hitting the Gym and putting on muscle...so as not to be pushed out of the marking comps..
I'd even go so far to say this kid is our JR8 replacement and would be too valuable to risk in the physical argy bargy of ruck contests...
I like that SR is not a spectator on the field...he's in motion towards the ball and ball carrier...he's a player...and a great kick for goal.

Im not really too sure if thats what we are trying to do and if Cj wants to stay. The 3 year Soldo extension prett much tells him where he stands at Richmond and its a 2 year deal. take or go

These things would have been negotiated for weeks before it become public and in the media

CCJ is a much better prospect than Ryan on exposed form.

However, Ryan can football and he is 6 foot 10, you can't teach that and as a result, his development will be slower.

But like Max, you just never know what will come of the 2.05+ who can play the game.

we need to forget Samson's first game, picked up the massive corkie one minute in at his first contest that would have slowed down a Rhino and his young skinny leg just crumpled. we need to nurse soldo and Nank through the preseason and home and away for a tough finals campaign...so if the young fella can get at least eight or nine games under his belt all good for him to step up in 2023.
