Lynch is not expected to ruck. He's the Mercedes. In the VFL Ryan has already been rucking a lot from what I see. Plus moving to the forward line.
Ruck skills aren't bad and goal kicking is fine.
A package that we've been looking for in Balta, Miller.
I hope Ryan plays out the year in the AFL.

It's not like we really have a choice in the matter. Our key forward situation is dire, Lynch will be 31 this year and is always prone to injury. Reiwoldt is on his last legs. We have traded away all our good draft picks. We've got Nankervis, Miller, Soldo, Biggy, Colina (when and if he gets over his back injury) to play ruck. No way I'd be developing Ryan as anything other than a key forward. It's just not an option.

I would be moderately surprised if he gets picked this week, though it is intriguing to see how the club approaches this match at selection. We clearly need more forward pressure than we had last week. Equally it is nice to have a second ruck option.

From what Dimma has said in the past, the second ruck position is a horses for courses sort of affair.

Against Carlton the backup ruckman (Silvagni) played forward and is somewhat servicable and thus Miller got the nod as a ruck/ defender.

Against Adelaide obviously a ruck/ forward was deemed more beneficial, seemingly due to the high % of ruck time O’Brien spends in the middle and the (perceived) amount of additional aerial contests that occur playing on a narrower Adelaide Oval.

Against Collingwood, their backup ruckman (Cox) would probably lean towards Miller again. But Ryan did kick three and deserves to hold his spot.

But; it will also be raining Friday night. What type of ruck that favours I don’t know.

Will be very interesting to see who they go with.

If raining I suspect a big strong body...Miller...would be the go...
But then who knows how Cox performs in the wet as a ruckman...then maybe SR to go defensive on him...?!?

I think last year was the time for games into kids selections. This year the club is taking the stairs. My impression is there will not be any selections this year other than the match committee thinks it increases our chances of winning the game. And it is difficult to criticise that policy if you want to win a flag. Jack is going ok but if it is a wet night game, Jack Riewoldt is Mr Wet Night Game. Samson on the other hand wishes he missed the wet night game he played.

C'mon. He kicked 2, missed two sitters He would normally kick so that would have been 4 and gave one away to Mansell that he could have kicked himself as well so that's 5. He also gave a goalsquare assist to Short for another goal. And he takes pressure off Lynch being double and triple teamed because they have to keep a decent player on him.

Jack will get rested a couple of times throughout the year but if he's fit and still providing the kind of productive offence that he has so far then he'll play finals and then you can really go to town. He's a club legend and you're living in Sydney. (LaLaLand)

When it's sunny and dry play all three including Samson to stretch defences like we did on the weekend but when it's cold and wet we will play Jack because he's worth his weight in gold in those kind of conditions.

I think this is by far the best policy to enter a season with, especially when you hope to contend. When you have a load of fringe players you could throw a blanket over in terms of where they sit in the pecking order, I think it is better to get them all involved at different stages, at least until one puts their hand up to demand elevation above the others.

We seem to have that situation at present. Running players Ross, Clarke, Sonsie, Cumberland, Banks, Ralphsmith, Mansell, even Dow and Brown all probably offer different skill variations at a similar level at this stage. And similarly the fringe talls Soldo, Ryan, Young, Gibcus, Miller have got different things to offer around a similar level. Hopefully this allows us to deploy all these players to advantage at different times. Over a long season I don't think it is wise to say one of these players might be slightly ahead therefore he plays every available game.

Interesting to look at our team without all the 30+ year olds in it to get a vague idea of how it might look in a few years...Borad is 29 yrs 11 months so count him as 30+ along with Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt, Pickett, Tarrant, Grimes, Prestia, Lynch.

There are a few we are still speculating on in there at this stage, but most of the signs look decent. Sonsie, Banks, Young, Ryan, Ralphsmith, Miller, Bradtke, Cumberland in particular have a lot to prove yet.

Players of likely value not used: Short, Brown, Soldo and others coming from underneath. So we may also have some bargaining chips to swap players to fill holes.

The boy speaks well, I think early on when we first got him people thought he might be a bit of a up himself sort of guy but he just seems like a really optimistic and happy guy who doesn't take himself too seriously.
If he had the footy IQ of Jack he'd be a superstar. Needs to still prove himself and put in the hard yards so he can become a monster like Lynch but he's showing good signs.
He has the tools just needs Jack and Tom to teach him how to get the best out of himself.

If it was up to me TTT, I would pick them all and tell the AFL to **** off we are playing 30 players and if Gil whinges I would chin the campaigner.

Ryan played well, ideally you would keep him in the team but it looks tricky v filth from a team balance perspective.

Think that for the first third/ half of the year he’ll get a good run of games as the third forward/ second ruck but may not necessarily get consecutive games; and will be interchanged with Miller.

I fully expect that towards the middle/ back half of the year Riewoldt would be among a cadre of players that will be rested with Ryan taking over the second key forward spot (although Bauer may get a run too).

We generally don’t make large amount of changes so I think you’re right and Ryan will now keep his spot.

I forgot about Dow. We have to have a look at him I suppose. I've written him off and prefer to play Sonsie and Ross.

I don't know what dimma will make of Cumberland's game.
Clarke has been ok and he and Mansell will probably play.

TBH I don't really know Collingwood.
I'd Cover Broad on a week to week basis.
Hugo first or debut banks.
DEbuting Young and game 2 for Ryan is adventurous stuff by the match committee.

Miller as a KPD and back up ruck is the odd one. Almost every club uses KPF as back up ruck.

Miller was training in that role I thought. Then he's back to the back line. Then dropped for young, who is a mature body.
And Ryan gets a game and almost keeps Miller out of that position.



Miller plays KPF and ruck in the VFL. Nyoun played KPD/ruck.

I thought Miller was good in the ruck and kicked a couple of goals in play.

But getting snaked by young and Ryan.
Tarrant and Gibcus will be available soon.
