Ryan was double teamed in the ruck up against Nank and OHB today and come out ahead against both according to Match Sim onlookers.

I know its still only pre season training but this is the 2nd or 3rd match sim report where he has had the better of Nank and put in a good performance.

Could be a whole range a factors including Nanks own engagement levels BUT ruckman don't start to come into their own until this age bracket he is now entering.

Think there is still a bit to play out here.

Rucks are over rated

How many premiership teams in the last 15 -20 years has had a Gun Ruckman - Gawn and before him Cox
1 position on the ground and we end up having 4-5 Rucks on the list

I would much rather have a player like Sims playing in the Ruck with rotations of 3-4 players that are adequate fill in
Ryan in 2 years time should just be the Ruckman that attends ball ups and concentrate on spending our dollars and picks on Mids/KPP

Spot on. The proliferation of second hand, B and C grade ruckmen in most premiership teams since about 2000 really reinforces the point we're better off just developing other spots on the list and poaching a decent option who's second in the pecking order from another side when we're looking more mature. Just look at Hawthorn and Meek for example.

It's getting that way the way The Afl Old Boys Club is changing and redesigning the game and it's rules...ala fast breaks from the center with lots of goal scoring...minimising the physical contact in the game...and try to change it to a fast breaking basketball game...not a contest...with rah rah goals scored.
It's half way there now with the Brownlow virtually being a midfielders award...ignoring defenders, Rucks, Full Forwards...
I would always want a good ruckman in my side...ala Nank in 2017...just physically imposed hisself upon the game.
With the way the game is changing you might as well drop the Rucks and just acquire big midfielders ala Crapps to physically impose themselves at the center bounces...and overwhelm the midget oppo...

You see i want a different Ruck set up

I would love for Ryan to develop into a adequate Ruckman to fill a role at center bounces and learn to get involved in link up play and drift foward to create mismatches whilst having 2-3 more players capable of attending boundry throw ins and give Ryan a break.

Sims , Balta , and a player like Miller rotating
Athletic running Ruckman getting 15-20 touches a game and kicking 20 goals a year is what i see the game developing into
Unless ofcourse you find a Gawn from somewhere

No really. If a ruck can dominate they give their tema a free ride to clean ball movement and can domiante stoppages.

However, if you get big lump, who goes in hard and is disciplined you cna nullify a top end tap ruck to a nil all draw.

So rucks are over rated because teams focus on having a nullifying ruck if they don't have a good tap ruck. So there are very few dominant tap rucks, because AFL teams work to stop that happening.

But, if you don't have a genuine ruck you get murdered. Sometimes a KP can stop gap. But not long term.

Interesting to hear today that even one of our VFL train on players who has participated in the match sims reckons Ryan has been very dominant in ruck so far in the hit outs and would be looming as a starting preference currently

I think he'll start r1 in the forward line. Not ideal, but it's better than not playing at all amd hes not playing ahead of the captain.

Did we officially announce captains!? How have I missed that!

Genuine question, not being a smart ass

Nothing confirmed but Nank was referred to as captain in the new membership campaign. There has been no indication from the club at all that it was ever being considered that Nank would hand the reigns over anyway.

He would have stepped down by now if someone else was getting the C too.

Have we had photo day yet?

It’s generally the best indicator who has the job because they are always seated next to the coach

You're on the Ryan band wagon.. great. He can ruck, no doubt, he's beaten Nank in a practice match, a match sim Wow... Ryan ~ Captain Blood, reincarnate.

hasn't Nank had a interrupted preseason? Not doing all the training up the Sunny Coast.

Ryan will be in the 22. Back up ruck off the bench...Kosi back up ruck was good last year, but not if he is KPD.

Lynch, Bauer, Fawcett, Faull etc not suitable for back up ruck.

I hope we keep Ryan out of the forward line,

I am a bit excited that Ryan has outperformed Nank in the preseason.

Just a bit.

If Ryan can work as an AFL #1 ruck that makes our list look so much better.

Ryan has been a better centre-bounce ruckman than Nank for awhile, so that is no surprise. It is the rest of the game that has been the concern. If Ryan can learn to get more involved in general play and hold onto those 'almost' grabs he will be a very handy player. Richmond will give him every opportunity I feel so it is really up to Samson what happens next.

want to see a complete change to how he approaches marking contests. just standing there with your arms straight up waiting for the ball to land in your hands is not working.

OMG he is having a better preseason!!!! everyone all hail Samson.

He would want to show something because it just does not get any worse with what he has dished up in the past.

If we play both him and Nank then someone maybe his moms have incriminating photo's tucked away somewhere.
That would explain a lot.

The team needs pace not witches hats.We also need forwards who can mark the ball.

Let the bloke prove himself in the VFL and see if he can push Nankervis out of the team.
