I think its time to accept its not strength with Ryan, its ability.

This whole, needs to get stronger argument is dead. Much younger, lighter frames than his are holding their own in the AFL if they are good enough.

I had high praise for him when drafted and early days he killed the VFL as a genuine KPF. He just aint good enough.

He was so promising early but seems to have got more and more uncoordinated as time goes on :straining:

So not a strength issue, a technique issue?

He's got the perfect opportunity to mail a list spot this year - Nank slowing down & all.

He's shown good ability at pretty much everything at times. And Sampson hasn't put it together as yet. Hope he works hard and genuinely steps up this year. Bit of a frustrating one.

he's also put in some VFL howlers over the time.
Some absolute 'what was that' efforts.
Make or break year coming in 26'

Back up rucks are probably the least important spot on the list. Ryan is capable enough as back up ruck, doesn't look like he'll ever be a No 1 or even AFL standard, but just having a tall warm body is good enough.
The AFL is awash with talentless rucks who only get a contract because of their height.

As much as I’d love a young workhorse like Ivan Maric or Nank coming through, I think Samson is a bust.

Are we just garbage at developing rucks? Aside from Brad ottens who have we developed? Brendon Gale?

Gale wasn't even a ruckman, was a CHF, who then became a CHB/Ruck after the fact.

Mark Lee is probably the last ruckman we developed and didn't sign elsewhere

Since then

Steven O'Dwyer ( Melbourne)
Greg Dear (Hawthorn) first ruck from 94-96
Justin Charles (Footscray) first ruck when fit and not suspended 96-98
Brad Ottens (drafted but we played more forward)
Greg Stafford (Swans)
Trent Knobel (Saints)
Ben Marsh (Crows)
Tristian Cartledge (Essendon)
Troy Simmonds (Freo)
Ivan Maric (Crowns)
Shaun Hampson (Carlton)
Toby Nank (Swans)

Unless we are couting Ray Hall or Royce Vardy, the last pure Ruck we developed and played 50+ games for us was Mark Lee who debuted in 1977 from memory. ****ing wild. Angus Graham played 48 games for us, but was hardly a successful venture. Even Ottens really spent more time as being the "Twin Tower" alongside Richo.

Benny Gale became the first ruck more-so after the fact. I think the plan was for Justin Charles to be the first ruck, who had 1 very good year before getting suspended and injured etc. After that we got Ottens, who we used more as a KPF & Benny filled in as a ruck while McKee & Steinfort flamed out. Benny definitely had time as our #1 ruckman, but i don't think it was via a grand plan- just a result of Charles/Ottens etc.

From there we gad Adam Pattison, Dean Putt, Angus Graham - yuck

Hard to believe it, but we basically haven't draft/recruited a ruckman to play 100 games for us for nearly 50 years - half a century!

Its why i am ok with Mason Cox coming over. Basically a cheap "Greg Stafford" for 1-2 years to help us not be bullied

What about Good Old USA, after all Sam McClure named him in the top 3 rucks in the AFL.

Adam Pattison played 61 for us.
Tob be honest, he wasn't that bad, perhaps just undersized.
I always held out hope for Simon Clark in the late 80s. Tried hard and had his moments.
Of course, had an outstanding VFA career and won a Liston Medal.
Those two at least had a dip.

Pattison was ordinary, i think a lot of us gaslit ourselves into thinking he wasn't that bad - but truth be told, as a ruckman he was about as far away from the generational rucks of that era as you could get (Dean Cox. Goldstein, Sandilands etc)
The only reason he played that many is the same reason Dow will maybe end up playing 60+ games for us to. In the name of "rebuilding" - just gifted games. He was destroyed in the ruck-work and with our midfield being average we were never going to go anywhere with him.

Simon Clark was before my memory kicks in. 1980 kid and O'Dwyer is the first ruck i remember outside of "The General"

the Naismith experiment saw us draft 199 Sims rather than another DFA

Nank retires I think we trade in another ruck.

Ryan or Sims off the bench of 5.

RFC been playing Soldo, Miller late 2022 as low TOG back up ruck
