Campbell is working as Central Australia Development Coach in the AFLNT.

AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) is excited to announce former AFL footballer, Matt Campbell has been appointed the Central Australia Development Coach.

Playing at the AFL’s top level after being drafted by North Melbourne in 2006 Campbell went on to play with the Kangaroos fram 2006 to 2012 before also spending time playing for North Adelaide in the SANFL

In 2009, Campbell was selected to play in the Indigenous All-Stars Match against the Adelaide Crows. The All-Stars side at the time featured fellow Territorians, Cyril Rioli, Nathan Djerrkura, Shaun Burgoyne, and Andrew McLeod. Campbell was named Best on Ground, winning the prestigious Polly Farmer Medal.

Campbell’s appointment aligned with the inaugural Northern Territory Academy High-Performance Camp that was hosted in Darwin from 18 – 22 January 2023.

Hosting over 90 young talented footballers from across the Territory, the High-Performance Camp provided 5 days of high-intensity training, personal development programs, and an open combine testing event, with results on par if not greater than results from other states/ territories.

AFLNT Academy Head Coach Brent Renouf said, “This camp sets players up to perform well for the year ahead, a key focus was for players to develop mateship among their peers and provide each of them with personal-development training programs continue their growth wherever they’re based in the Territory.”

The Alice Springs-based program will provide a local high-performance environment for talented boys and girls to be best prepared for the national AFL talent pathways. Servicing Alice Springs, surrounding remote communities, Tennant Creek and Barkly regions, players involved will be identified and be developed on their fundamental skill development on and off the field. The academy program will provide key links to Collingwood and Melbourne’s Next Generation Academies.

Along with his elite playing experience, Campbell transitioned from playing AFL to playing for the Darwin Buffaloes in the Northern Territory Football League and Pioneer Football Club in the Central Australia Football League, with his side winning the CAFL Men’s Premiership in 2022.

Working alongside Development and Talent Lead Dan Gretgrix, the new role, will provide a key link between the new Academy and stakeholders to assist in the development of local football coaching.
