Footballers could be secretly serving suspensions, says anti-doping official

AFL players who are being investigated by the anti-doping authoritycould already be secretly serving voluntary suspensions; even before cases are formally launched against them, resolved, or aired publicly.

An anti-doping officer working in Olympic sport has told Fairfax Media he would be “surprised” if AFL footballers had not taken the option confidentially, or at the very least considered the strategy.

The source, who has assisted numerous elite sports people in taking voluntary suspensions, said Essendon captain Jobe Watson - now sidelined indefinitely by injury - would be a prime candidate to put his hand up given the Brownlow medallist’s unique circumstances.

I was told a month ago by another partner at my firm that these notices were coming and Essendon were screwed. He has excellent AFL links acting for some high profile coaches and players I won't mention.

Until that time I believed that Essendon would get away with this as ASADA's process seemed to be against their legislation. However, he is extremely confident that the EFC will not exist in 5 years without AFL support.

Is it weird I feel sorry for them?

Show causes were the only logical outcome for anyone who read the original AFL charge sheet and it amazes me that there has been debate surrounding it.

Essendon and the AFL have handled this appallingly from day one. They were given the chance to self report (ie come clean) but used that opportunity to muddy the waters instead. They have been pushing the proverbial uphill ever since.

McDevitt this morning on ABC radio offered dialogue with the players and said it was in everyone's interest that the resolution now be as speedy as possible.

Not sure where this will go now. If they can nobble the whole thing by proving that the process was flawed then I suspect a smart bomb planted by Vlad early in the piece, especially as he has slunk off with nothing having really pierced his thick hide.

My thoughts exactly. There is a reason they went to the AFP and a retired Federal Judge, and thats why. You could also argue that this was a good delaying tactic by the EFC as it delayed the investigation while ASADA dotted its I's and crossed its T's and double checked everything was above board.

Essendon just have to delay this as long as they can. Procedural errors, injunctions, stalling tactics, anything. Their legal fees will mount, but potential damages diminish as players retire.

Im waiting for the penny to drop with the players and they realise that its the club that ****** them over. Then they realise that their only chance is legal action against the club, and not ASADA. What a merry ride that will be.
Good post.

Seems that by paying for the players legals the club has effectively bound them. No doubt promised to look after them if suspensions do come too.

The new head of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) says dozens of former and current AFL players have "difficult" decisions to make after being issued with formal notices over alleged doping infringements.

ASADA has issued show-cause notices to 34 former and current players on charges of using a prohibited substance.

In an exclusive interview with ABC Radio's AM program, ASADA chief Ben McDevitt - a former Australian Federal Police deputy commissioner who has been in the job for a month - said he was satisfied the individual players had a case to answer.

"Players now are at a critical point here, [because] as much as some would say that a player who gives assistance has disadvantaged themselves, in fact when we go into this process the opposite is true," he told AM presenter Chris Uhlmann

I like the cut of this guy's jib.

The chink in Essendon's united stand armour is the players at other clubs, who presumably don't get the same legal largesse from their former masters. Crameri in particular did not leave on great terms. Crameri the canary has a nice ring to it.

I was told by a person who is on a social committee at Essendon that they were advised a few weeks ago that the club did have a case to answer. They have known this was coming.

One guy I know who claims to be connected with the club has said they had no case to answer as well.

Looks like the show cause notice changes that

On a relative minor note, trading players at years end may be a difficult process for Essendon.

They do have the end of round 1 compo pick, kindly afforded to them by the AFL but everything else will be very limited for them.

Who would even want to go to them?
Can't imagine any club would want to go near them at years end, which made me wonder at the time why the Western Bulldogs went after Crameri so hard at the end of last year.

After catching up on last night and this mornings posts, want to take a quick moment to thank Maliface for his posts. Clear, precise, and giving me a much better understanding of it all.

My GF is in her final year of law, and while she's probably hotter than you mate, I understand you better ;)

I ventured in there quickly, all the foamers and Hirdites were still there.
Made a couple of posts and left pretty quickly.
Lance Uppercut, probably the most articulate and dogged of their defenders, has just posted that the show causes could be a last ditch attempt at tree shaking to get the charges to stick. Trying to bluff the players into cracking as it were.

To the bitter end it is then chaps.

The HTB is a fantastic source of clarity on everything to do with this case if you can be bothered going over there and trawling through it. Malifice has done a terrific job of summing up.

A number of Carlton posters, some of whom you don't see on this board, have been shining lights: Laphroaig, Thrawn, Blue Since 62 and several others have done us all proud. You know who you are. Nice work.

Just so readers can wrap their heads around the enormity of this (and I'm still struggling to do it myself), the loss of 34 players for two years equates to losses (to the EFC alone) of:
  • Approx fifteen million dollars in compensation to suspended players in the likely scenario that the players sue the club for negligence (if the players are not paid during suspension) or probably a roughly equivalent amount to pay an additional 34 players to play for the club for 2 years during suspensions.
  • Add another approx 5 million for loss of endorsements and future revenue for said players.
  • Probably another (conservative) ten million dollars for legal fees, loss of sponsorship and reduced gate revenue for two years.
At a conservative estimate I reckon this will cost them in the realm of thirty odd million dollars by the time its played out.

If I was Little, I'd be seeking some pretty big assurances from the AFL right now.

Even assuming the AFL props them up for the next decade or so, theyre going to be really really shit for a very very long time.

This is unprecedented in the AFL.

James Hird: I'll be in a very good place when this is all over. Damn straight James; youre sitting in Paris in summer enjoying a million dollar holiday. At least you got that bit right.
Like I said a long time ago - it could be the end of the bummers
