Without knowing any more on this than what's in the article, why wouldn't every injured player in any sport just nominate themselves for voluntary suspensions when injured? Its not an admission of guilt and athletes can still train while under voluntary suspensions. Gets them some anti-doping credits in the bank for if they ever happen to drink an energy drink or take some sort of exotic substance. Win-win, surely?
Seems a bit of a weak 'punishment' to me and not at all a deterrent.

Most bombers fans I know are glad about this too and want them to cop what ever is coming so they can sooner try and move on.

None of them post on BF obviously.
Know a couple of Bombers and they still believe the club has done nothing wrong and blame the AFL !!!

I know 1

Everyone else stopped buying memberships and watching on tv when it looked likely they where guilty early last year. They have been ridiculed by others for doing so but I guarantee you when the club is on its knees they will sign back up and help as long as those responsible are removed while these Hird fans will probably whine and watch them die.

Having said that I'm glad it appears as though justice will prevail.

I always maintained if we ever get caught cheating again (God I hope not) I want us to cop it on the chin as it just isn't on at all.

The fact it's essendon in this mess is just typically them

Question

How can the 34 players served the notices, be allowed to play this weekend? Imagine that happening, in say, athletics/olympics?

No chance
Show cause notice is different to an infraction notice.

This is the first step and allows the athlete to respond to ASADA directly as to why they should not pursue an infraction notice. If the explanation or proof provided by the athlete is inadequate, then it goes to the ADVRP and they consider whether to add the names to the register and instruct the AFL that infraction notices have been served.

Once the infraction notices are issued, technically the athlete should be immediately suspended pending the tribunal hearing.

Therefore, the show cause notice does not result in the athlete not being allowed to compete, only the issuing of an infraction notice.
