Player Watch #34: Liam McBean

Neither Bean or Vickery are lazy or can't be bothered that's a ridiculous notion.
They are just players who would have been better in another era.
They are like dinosaurs out there.
The game speeds around them like they are on a treadmill.

Seems to me McBean is playing like a bloke who thinks he wont get a game for starters and definately wants out. Imo all the blame does not lie with Liam.

In recent years there are precedents for players dropping right away who have wanted out of clubs.Yarran and Garlett spring straight to mind.

I actually think it sad that the club could not find a way to give him a go in the seniors especially when the other two have been so poor and so inconsistent.
I would prefer we actively look at possible replacements for Vickery and Griffiths.No better time to look when both are badly out of form. Which lets face it has been most of the time Liam has been there.
I strongly believe some areas of the list in such a bad way that we do need to experiement and throw young players in just for the experience and see what they can offer.Our list is not that strong that we can afford not to do this.I would go as far as giving all three of Moore, Chol and McBean games.But it seems the club is content with those who they regularly play.
Yep Different perspectives and differing evaluations of where we are at.

I stated a couple of years back that I wasn't that sure about McBean. At his height he just wasn't a big clunker of marks, instead he was relying on getting to a lot of ground balls and using his ability to get out the back to kick a lot of his goals. Add to that a distinct lack of defensive pressure and it's little wonder to me as to why he isn't getting as many games as some want. For mine McBean should be playing as a roaming forward who pushes up the ground and covers territory but he doesn't play like that. Instead he plays like he is anchored to the square as a lead mark kick or crumb and kick type and at AFL level that just won't cut it.

If he does go elsewhere personally I'm not that concerned as I just don't see it coming back to bite us on the back side.

Not sure about that rd , I watched tv pretty closely , rarely does he run into open space , and rarely does he get involved in anything but a one on one in the goal sq or within 25m. exciting that griff is showing the opposite of this and looking to really own it , involved in everything he can, that speccy in the goal sq was sssspecial

I would say in most cases if a player has been around for 4 years he would play at least 10 20 games if fit. Surely you understand the need to look at what players can offer through the stages of development.
McBean and Elton have both been totally ignored when there has been real opportunity to have a look at where they are at at the level.
Does it not concern you that after 4 seasons no one really knows what these blokes have to offer at the level after 4 yrs. Cmon it is crazy.

It may be possible that what these two have shown in the level below and on the track are just not up to it.... They see a fair bit more of them than we do....

Having said that yes I'd like to see what they have.... but I suspect it isn't much...

Ever since we drafted him i wanted us to play and develop him as a CHB.
Imo i had/still have good reasons for this.
1/ we lack kpds.
2/ Liam imo played his best footy as a junior in defense. In fact it is what got him drafted.
3/ He had two exact types in front of him in Vickery and Griffiths both like liam 200cm fwd /ruck types. there was never a chance in hell all three could play in the one fwd line. And it meant we remained deficient in kpf's.
4/ liam is not a strong over head mark but he is still good in the air.He showed an ability as a very skinny junior to get a good fist in and spoil.This by itself takes away one of his percieved weaknesses His agility good pace reading of the play imo would have made him an ideal kpd prospect.

Any way it is all moot now.

Mate I just don't think he can get to the right places.
For a while now he has really struggled early in games as it all just buzzes around him and he spends half his time recovering from a previous fruitless effort. Eventually as the game wore down he comes into it for more and can get to contests. But now his confidence is going though the floor completely and he has no confidence or faith in himself at all.
If he had been dropped back a couple of games ago it would have been to his own benefit because he's in a deep dark hole right now.
He is going to have to go one of two ways over the pre season, build ub and just become a big Ruckman, or run himself into the ground to improve his tank. I'm not sure if he's capable of the latter.
The game has changed so much in the past few years that even a tall forward has to run a long way and make many many repeat efforts.
Mcbean battles with it, Cloke is struggling.
Ty's in trouble at the moment.

Mcbean's a spud, has had 4 years to smash the door down and hasn't done it, what i saw today his level is D1 ammos. will be delisted and end up at some suburban club in 2017.

I think VFL is his level. After all, he's topped the goal kicking there a few times.

That he hasn't been able to force his way into the team that doesn't exactly have a load of quality tall forwards show's he's just not AFL level (and it's on him, not the coaches). Good AFL players dominate VFL games (e.g. Conca the past few weeks).

You've omitted one key fact , can also be attributed to the player failing to cut it. Jono o rourke is 12 months from being delisted , why don't hawthorn play him ea week and will it point to their poor development. Happens everywhere , hawthorn had grimley and lowden on their list for yonks, WB had acye cordy for years , were their failures ALL due to poor development ?

There is also a lot of kids poorly developed at the wrong hands and are wasted.
There is something drastically wrong within our club as if you go by posters on here no one knows who or what to blame. Some say coaches,recruiter's, fitness advisers, hierarchy,player's you don't know where to look and who to reply to. For me like any business if it is failing it all goes back to the top as they make all the decisions. An example out local KFC store was so bad and run down we had to go to the next suburb if we wanted some. After numerous complaints by people Hierarchy came in sacked all the managers and stuff and brought in the assistant manager from another store and the business is thriving now as store is clean the food is cooked to perfection.
To me it's the perfect example what is happening to our club and the posters on here or other sites are complaining(well apart from the ECI brigade whom are happy with mediocrity) but none is listening.

McBean to me seems to lack urgency. For someone in his position, having been on the list for a few years now, playing a position we have a potential spot for based on AFL performances, you would think he'd be busting his gut at VFL level to replace Vickery. To me, it seems he either lacks urgency, or is incapable (be it skill wise, conditioning wise, or from a psychological perspective) of stepping up on on a consistent level enough to displace Vickery.

McBean is either unwilling to work hard, or is incapable of doing so. Either way, he needs to fix this or he is of no use to us.

And those who feel he is hard done by on VFL form, how many players have we had on our list who have busted their guts week in, week out at VFL level and not been rewarded?

McDonough, Dea, Darrou, Gourdis all should have played more AFL level than they did based on VFL form.

As someone that is most definitely ECI i am not happy with mediocrity. Just because I am still emotionally invested in the club doesn't mean i agree with the way it is run or think things are rosy. I have been screaming for most of the board and footy department to be sacked for years. Anger is an emotion too and if most of you ECO nimrods aren't angry, annoyed and frustrated with the way the club is being run then i don't understand why you bother to call yourself a supporter.

Sure but just saying that to balance the argument, as it happens at all clubs. Some of the best teams and programs still have players who don't make it.

What is the difference? I haven't given up on my team and ride the highs and lows of being a richmond supporter. I agree that McBean hasn't earned it this year but in previous years he was basically beating the door down. Even when he went into the AFL I thought he played well (particularly vs Collingwood, and I thought he looked dangerous considering he'd injured his hand vs the Bombers), but then he got dropped for no real reason. He plays this season like he doesn't really care, though.
