Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Will ask my mate who plays at the Chargers to tell me more about him. Seems very athletic, maybe potential midielder?

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Love the look of Shaw. Seems more of a 3rd tall/flanker so might move into the midfield. Looks similar to a Grant Birchall type.

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Is Shaw another attempt at drafting the player that we wanted Tom Lee/Aaron Kite to be?

Agree 100%. I think Gunston looks to be very much the Lee mould and purely judging by the video footage, I prefer Shaw. He simply looks great. They both have terrific overhead marking qualities though which is my #1 target in a footballer, I LOVE guys who can take a strong contested grab, it's just so essential.

Sam Shaw per Inside Football:

"Sam's a very intelligent kid and very well rounded. He's an extremely athletic 192cm player who kicks left foot and played mainly as a winger, half back but showed adaptability by playing forward at times. Very quick and was in the top 10 at the draft camp for sprints. Quite an exciting player and if he's not in the elite athlete mould then he's very close to it. I'd expect him to go maybe mid-second round". Oakleigh Chargers coach Steve Grace.

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Purely from his video I really do like the look of this one.

Firstly he's a left-footer and we are very light on those. In addition he's a runner and boy can he run. That's a V8 motor inside him - he is really quick. Good disposal and has a great leap on him as well.

Looks the type we'll develop into that tall killer wing-man!! :thumbsu:

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Wow wow wow! Just looked at his highlights video, and does he have a magnificent kicking action! Accurate and penetrating, reminds me of Sam Gilbert a tad. You've done it again Rendell!:thumbsu:

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

Sammy's a mate of mine, S and I have to say you've got yourself a great kid here. I haven't seen him play enough football to comment on that, but the video clips will tell you more than I could.

What I will tell you is that he's a genuinely good bloke, intelligent as someone said before, and a good all round athlete. He's a good basketballer and has been in the aths team at school since god knows when. Basically, if Rendell picked him up he's got enough talent to make it, and I can tell you that he has the head on his shoulders for him to maximise his talent.

Congrats on picking him up. :thumbsu:

Thanks for the inside info there, Ben. :thumbsu:

Just from his video clips he looks a Pendlebury type with a tickle more height and a lot more speed.

I really like the look of of this lad - he genuinely looks a foot-baller. :thumbsu:

Thanks once again.

That's cool to hear :thumbsu: Do you reckon he's the sort of kid who will handle moving interstate well?

I went to Japan with him and he coped perfectly well there. Adelaide is certainly not as far as that. I think he'll be fine.

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

just had the opportunity to look at Sam's footage, he looks like a real beauty and may be the steal of the draft

I love the fact that he is a left footer, looks like he can play in a mutiple of positions and I have no doubt that he will end up playing many games in a midfield / wing role

he moves like a young Embly

Re: Selection 45 - Sam Shaw

How long was he there? That's pretty cool though, sounds like he's a worldly kid :thumbsu:

Only a couple of weeks, but we were all given a lot of license to fend for ourselves there, and the two of us negotiated a sticky situation fairly well.:p

He's definitely the sort of bloke I'd want to have at Essendon, that's for sure.

Sam Shaw Q&A

Did you know the other draftees prior to the draft?
“I knew Dan Talia reasonably well because we played together in the Vic Metro side so I met him throughout the year and seen him a fair bit and at the draft camp as well. It was my first time on Sunday meeting Jack Gunston. He didn’t play in the carnival because he missed a fair bit this year with a dislocated elbow. He is a really nice guy and I think we’ll all get on quite well because we have very similar temperament and nature so I’m really happy to get drafted with them.”

Seems like a good kid :thumbsu:
