Player Watch #35: Charlie Lazzaro - contract extension until end of 2024

Makes me think of Priddis when younger (just the way he runs and holds his body). Has barely put a foot wrong - looking a big win for us at the moment. At this stage the 2020 draft is out of the park for us, early days though.

From what I understand, Outside of the champs Shifter hardly watches any junior footy anymore. All of his so called “expert opinions” are based on the opinions of the scouts and recruiters he is in tight with.

He did commentate half a NAB game at Sandringham earlier in the season before diving to Bendigo to watch another NAB game on the same day. He watches plenty of footy, just doesn’t get right all the time (which is no different to many recruiters).

Love this kid’s attitude. Racked them up again on the weekend. Just bad luck he was dropped from the AFL side the other week as someone needed to make way for Cunners and Jed. Does not drop his head, puts in 100% every contest and is so reliable. Another of our first year players oozing leadership qualities. Hopefully comes back in soon.

You can just tell he is going to give it all that he has to get the absolute best out of himself. For such a young kid he has absolutely been a class act.

For all the plaudits our other youngsters get (and rightfully so) - this guy has the potential to become one of our most damaging players for years to come.

Reminds me of a young Shaun Higgins and even Shannon Grant.

It's impressive we have first year players that are putting in performances where they end up getting tagged at VFL level.

We just chose a pure and athletic little footballer in the Lizard.
More than just an athlete. His skills off both sides of the body are some of the best in our squad. Really stood out to me during preseason when I dropped in mid week earlier in the year. Has a lot to learn still obviously, but you can tell he's the kid that's going to keep asking questions, keep wanting to get the best out of himself and improve and excel as a footballer in every sense. I'm positive that once he's cemented himself in the squad he will look to become one of our leaders. Loves a goal too.

Charlie Lazzaro has been in top form in the VFL, with the versatile first-year player often supplementing spells on the wing with time playing inside midfield.

He was everywhere against Port Melbourne in Round 16’s VFL win, collecting 26 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal en route to arguably a best-on-ground performance.

Charlie Lazzaro could make a return to the side, with his versatility to play in both the midfield and forward line making him a potential handy inclusion.

With ten games under his belt in 2021, Lazzaro’s last appearance came in the Round 18 clash with Essendon, where he finished with 14 disposals and a well taken goal.

Summary

Once again while the stats don't necessarily show it, but it was an impressive first season for our 2nd round draft pick from 2020. He came to club as relatively unknown, coming off the back of limited football in 2020 due to covid. Surprisingly, like Powell, he made every post a winner throughout the pre-season and managed to get a gig in round 1. He played the first 10 rounds of the year and proved his value as a 2nd round pick, with his run and carry and his ability to get involved with scoring chains. He has high footy IQ, and despite playing an unfamiliar role across half forward and wing, he managed to still show his potential. He has an elite work rate and very neat skills that is suitable to playing on the outside. While he didn't get much midfield time at AFL level he was able to show his inside ability at VFL level once he was sent back to the VFL. His impact at VFL was so good that at times he was even getting tagged around the ground. His professionalism, leadership and maturity off the field has also been very obvious in his first year at the club. The lizard, is a very smart individual who will leave no stone unturned to get the best out of himself. In order to continue his development, he is going to have to find a position at AFL level that will allow him to have more of a consistent impact. I'm not sure he has the height to be a genuine inside mid, but he has enough tools to make a wing or half forward his home. It will be interesting to see who he trains with during the pre-season. Yet another one of our youngsters who has a huge scope of development. In a show of confidence the club has signed him up until the end of the 2024 season.

The most impressive thing I noticed about him is his link-up work and high involvement on offensive transition. Multiple double efforts in a single chains were invaluable at VFL level.
