Let Stephenson keep it

Let Stephenson keep it

Apparently Stephenson wants a different number, but he'd be a good candidate.

Anyway, agree wholeheartedly with the OP and think most would. Include a poll for full righteousness.

If he wants a different number then fair enough but he should be offered to keep it.

And bring back 42 while we are at it

The greats deserve their numbers to be roaming the field
Beat me to it, it’s time to have 42 again being used. Love to have 35 stay with a deserving kid

Every time our first draftee plays more than a few games in his first year the topic of letting him keep it comes up. The problem with these things is once started how do you end them. Ideally one of the Daicos' or Prestigiacomo's boys will take 35, which would place a nice full stop on the rotation. Personally I'd like to see someone build a career in 35, but we might as well keep the rotation going a few more years pending a father/son.

I used to think the same until I heard Denise speak, now my position is some things are bigger than football and 42 is one of them. The decision should rest with the Millane family. If 42 ever graces the field again I'd like to see it either assigned as the captain's number or given to the winner of the Darren Millane Trophy each year.

My understanding is mother Millane is not keen to see it again.
And she was promised about it.

On that respect. It’s a promise so allowing her to decide when the time is right.

Because 42 is a high number it’s not overly missed except to Collingwood.
If it was to return at some time it would be a better for say a bull type player.
Maynard is a candidate.

But what about De Goey?

Though let’s leave the Millanes to decide.

Or after the era passes, may it be many many many years away.

35.

Stephenson and the number have found each other.

Though from all reports Stephenson would love 16 and it’s possible that’s his next season (Mayne might be about ready).

Ofcourse once the young lad Nick Daicos is on our doorstep maybe we hand it to him if he’s happy for that?

I want to make some points in all this, I am not a fan of the 35 rotation.

However, I have no qualms the Club tried something a bit different.

Was an idea, it’s been given a good run.
It just hasn’t worked.
Should be shelved.

I'd love to see #42 again, but I agree with your point that this can only happen in consultation with/at the instigation of the Millane family.

The circulation of #35 among each year's top pick began arbitrarily, and it should be ended the same way. It shouldn't need too much justification: the numbers of past champions should be allowed to inspire future champions, and the sacrifice of players such as Presti should be embedded in the fabric of the club and not in the number on a jumper.

You're right, the topic comes up most years now, because the policy of circulating #35 doesn't sit well with many.

I like the 35 idea and it's tribute to Presti. I hope the club keep it, it has a nice touch. I like numbers making their own history. So while I don't mind 5 going from Buckley to Maxwell to Elliott it is a little contrived. Thinking 6 and Pete McKenna, 22 and Johnny Greening, 5 and Barry Price, 23 and Ray Shaw, 9 and Phil Carmen, 26 and Gav Brown, 36 and Swanny and Sav, 10 and Pendles etc etc has a nice ring to it

So for me this 35 thing works and marks something. It will always scream Daicos also. Let other numbers find their great man without trying to manufacture it.

I hate manufactured traditions. Get rid if it!!

If Stevo doesnt want it somebody else will. Young Daics for example or a new Daics we might be recruiting.

As for 42, that should also come back into production. That decision I believe is in the hands of the Millane famiily. A promise is a promise so unless the family changes its mind or the club reneges or Mrs then nothing will change soon while Mrs Millane is still alive. Maybe in 2020 (anniversary year of our premiership?). Then we can give it to De Goey or Adams if they want it....or maybe Maynard.....possibly Sier or Wills? Needs to go to a bull.

36 for me will always be Rene Kink.
First number I put on my first jumper as a kid.

Nice! Aged 8 you were already the same size as Kinky.

My Hawthorn-supporting aunt expertly sewed '23' on my second Collingwood jumper, despite knowing Billy Picken was my favourite player. This was my birthday present.

Was she trolling me?
