Nice! Aged 8 you were already the same size as Kinky.

My Hawthorn-supporting aunt expertly sewed '23' on my second Collingwood jumper, despite knowing Billy Picken was my favourite player. This was my birthday present.

Was she trolling me?

My bother and I got our first jumpers at the same time.
You will be happy to know he chose number 25

Stephenson should take #11 or #16 next year
11 is a very odd number. Don’t think it would suit him.

If Mayne decides to pull up stumps etc then 16 will with little doubt go to Stephenson.

Otherwise unless there is a surprise or two the more likely numbers to be possibly available

6 if Goldsack decides that’s it, only vaguely possible
11 I think will be available but an odd looking number
16 see above
19 vaguely possible
27 possible
29 possible
31 unlikely looks safe
33 possible
35 He Keeps this when rotation shelved
40 possibly available
41 possible but not a number for a real talented type
43 likely available
44 possible
45 possible

I think it works when you have a top 10 pick because most top 10 picks get games in their first year. It doesn't work when your first pick is 30+, as has been the case in recent years. We want to see this famous number out there. In recent years, we haven't even been able to watch it at VFL level because Sier and McLarty spent majority of their debut years injured.

I think one major problem as well is that many people still associate the 35 with Daicos, not Presti. You couldn't have 2 more opposite players. The number is realistically a tribute to Presti, but many of us want to see it return to a flary player in the Daicos mould (or to one of his kids!)

It's a tough one as I like the tradition of giving a first year kid the honour of the jumper. But on the flip side, I think it's too divisive and it may be time to pick someone to keep the number.

I like the 35 idea and it's tribute to Presti. I hope the club keep it, it has a nice touch. I like numbers making their own history. So while I don't mind 5 going from Buckley to Maxwell to Elliott it is a little contrived. Thinking 6 and Pete McKenna, 22 and Johnny Greening, 5 and Barry Price, 23 and Ray Shaw, 9 and Phil Carmen, 26 and Gav Brown, 36 and Swanny and Sav, 10 and Pendles etc etc has a nice ring to it

So for me this 35 thing works and marks something. It will always scream Daicos also. Let other numbers find their great man without trying to manufacture it.
This 35 business whilst I get the Presti tribute idea,
I’d strongly suggest basically everyone thinks of 35 as Daicos.

The Presti situation is really just for the pedants.

Everything else pale imitation I’m afraid.
Just how I think it’s really viewed.

Ps not sure there is even a u tube on Presti highlights or if anyone has ever even searched for it, even himself :D

35.

Stephenson and the number have found each other.

Though from all reports Stephenson would love 16 and it’s possible that’s his next season (Mayne might be about ready).

Ofcourse once the young lad Nick Daicos is on our doorstep maybe we hand it to him if he’s happy for that?

I want to make some points in all this, I am not a fan of the 35 rotation.

However, I have no qualms the Club tried something a bit different.

Was an idea, it’s been given a good run.
It just hasn’t worked.
Should be shelved.
#16 would indicate Jonathan Brown was his favorite player.

I like what we currently do with 35.
Its nice to see it when you have a draftee doing well, and when you don't its only a year out of the rotation, so no big deal.
(It also gives that draftee a year in the system, and some confidence, and if theyve done well some power, before choosing their actual number - rather than just blindly following what they used for under 18's).
I think breaking that and assigning it to one of the Daicos boys (or in future to a son of Presti) adds a heap of extra pressure on the offspring... let them build their own story, and do it in their own number.
---

As for 42 - Keep it retired.
Leave it to the Millane family to decide when they are ready for it to be used again - if that is never then so be it.

Thats nice dear

I like the sarcasm, but I don't know why not caring who wears number 35 is any less valid an opinion than caring who wears number 35. If they wanted to rotate numbers on a weekly basis, I wouldn't care.

But to me number 35 will always represent Fasolo, Grundy, Degoey, Stephenson, Elliott...

Nah. It's Daicos.

Announcing youre not interested in a thread topic is a bit narcissistic.

Why's it more narcissistic to say that you don't care about a particular issue than it is to say that you do care about a particular issue? Either way you're showing a bit of narcissism by suggesting that your opinion is somehow significant.

Anyway.

Here's to narcissism.

Its laughable that people think of Presti and the #35. Eddies BS spin that Presti was selfless giving up his spot in a GF team......where is the tribute for Dayne Beams who reportedly did the same in 2011?? Eddies spin spin spin

Edit....leave it for Millanes mother to decide. That doesnt mean forever.

That is fair.

But, as a basketball fan I like the idea of retired numbers and think it becomes something special that stays with the club throughout its history. 50 years from now young fans could ask why number 42 is still retired, and the Darren Millane story would still have power.

Obviously you have too many players in AFL to retire the amount of numbers they do in basketball, but if its kept to only very significant and unique situations, like this one, then i see no reason why the number 42 couldn't stay retired throughout the future of the Collingwood Football Club. I think what happened to Millane is important enough for that.
