Joel Amartey
Joel Amartey has shown strong form in the ruck and as a key-position player at both ends of the ground since being drafted to the Sydney Swans as a rookie ahead of season 2018. The Ghanaian-Australian produced arguably his best performance of the 2019 season against Sydney University in Round 6, which saw him collect 42 hit-outs and a goal. In season 2020, he made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in Round 17 after producing some strong individual performances in scrimmage matches, and impressed with eight hit-outs and two inside 50.

And not sure where you got the statistical significance being marginal from. Ladhams has kicked 30 goals in his career with 13 goals from 31 games for us. Mclean kicked 25 just last year in arguably his worst season of footy ever.
One is principally a forward and the other is principally a ruck - not really a statistical equivalent.

Ralphy with a report that multiple clubs are inquiring, but he would like to stay at Sydney on a long-term deal.

Loves the city and club so it would take us lowballing him or something unforseen for him to consider rival opportunities.

The offer we made last year was a modest deal that he was happy to pass up

Club is keen to get a bigger sample size of his 2026 form before committing to a hefty free agency deal; talks will take some time to ramp up.

Yes, it was a fantastic kick that looked effortless. We have quite a few players capable of 50m+ goals which is a terrific threat to have.

The other thing I liked about it was that he looked really confident. As soon as he marked in that spot he decided to take the kick. Clearly thought "this is my bread and butter, I got this - I'm dead in front, just got to kick it straight 50 m, no wuckers". [In case you were wondering, I have occasional direct lines of sight into Amartey's head.]

Can you influence him to sign the contract extension?

Fox's report on Amartey

Rival clubs are “queuing up” for Sydney forward Joel Amartey after he couldn’t strike an extension with the club ahead of his free agency year.

Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph revealed Amartey is “absolutely desperate” to stay at the Swans but he’s set to draw interest from clubs as one of few key position free agents on the market.

It’s led to a waiting game between the two parties in a season the Swans have already boosted their attacking stocks with the addition of Charlie Curnow alongside Amartey and Logan McDonald.

“The Swans put in a modest offer last year, that was rebuffed,” Ralph said on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle.

“He didn’t have a great last year due to injury but kicked 43 goals the year before.

“Both parties happy to wait and see ... it’ll be interesting to see if clubs come really hard and if the offer is much more significant than Sydney’s.”

Asmartey. Back yourself. It won't be a huge offer but it will be better if he can go at 2-3 a game and stay fit. One of the boys.

It’s an interesting one. If he has a quiet year then we might hold off offering a new contract till later.
If he has a reasonable year then you can bet a lot of clubs will come knocking and make an offer which could be well superior to anything we could offer. He does love the club but at the end of the day he wants to look at the $$ and if he can get a better offer elsewhere he would have to consider it.

Joel the guest on the latest episode of the club's More Than Footy podcast/show

I really enjoyed that. It’s a great balance between light-hearted stuff and footy stuff.

And it answered a few questions that I’ve been wondering about - the big questions like Did Joel pick the Vengaboys himself? How frequently does he get the corn rows done? Are Justin and Laura still an item?

Well are they?

UFA - can’t force a match.

Will get something crazy like a 4 year x $800k offers as outside king, he will be only key forward available.

Love for him to stay as he is good on second defender not a good spearhead….

The biggest revelation from the interview was that Amartey's dad is only 5ft 4!

Gettable chaps suggesting contract talks with the Swans have stalled and if King stays at GC, there will likely be much more interest in Joel.

Looked great again on the weekend, especially early.

for sure ... there's no doubting amartey now in terms of what he can do at his best ... strong hands, imposes himself on contests, improved fitness ... and kicks goals
no doubt at all there'll be genuine rising interest in him as the season rolls on
