I said to my wife (who was due to give birth yesterday and is now overdue)when I got home that Watt ran in the sprint. She said, "If he's that quick how come the full-forward is always 5 metres ahead of him on the lead?" Smart girl, my wife!!
Difference is you have to be able to read the play, use your body, etc. He was never suited to FB because he would get lost in traffic or the FF would change directions. Most sprinters are not that fantastic when it comes to changing directions all the time.

If Watt backed himself rather than tried to focus too much on the opposition he would probably be well ahead of any other forward on a shoulder-to-shoulder lead. But he plays behind and watches the man rather than the movement of the ball up the field.

New Deledio was quick, but not that quick. Blistering. Watt was left in his smoke. Cant wait for the day Davey vs Wells in the Grand Final Sprint, proove whos the quickest player in the AFL
Better to see Wells leave Davey in his wake before and after the sprint :)

Not sure how many times you'd expect Watt (or any other player) to perform a 100 metre in match conditions.

Took more out of the 1st half of the race (and how quick out of the blocks which you need against a leading forward). Was in the mix and up amongst the first few over the 1st 50 metres.

Not a bad effort. But would've had a laugh if the club sent Sav along to race.

And speaking of Sav - whatever happened to the superboot/kick competition?

They should change the sprint to a triathlon type arrangement and each player does a long and accurate kick, a handball accuracy either hand, then a sprint to the line with 3 bounces as well, that would be more interesting, maybe also crunch a tackle bag on the way.
Well if they did that we wouldn't stand a chance of winning any of that ;)

Watts did seem a pretty stupid choice for the Kangas but we don't know why - maybe he was the only one willing to give it a try.

Don't mind Jozephs idea of adding a bit more to the race like bouncing, a dodge etc. A smart marketing person could come up with a ripper race that was more fun than an 11 second dash and more relevant to aussie rules.

Watt is one of the quickest over 400 metres at the club.

You might have noticed that over the burst distance, 10-20 metres, Watt was pretty tight with them, and foot taller than most of them - thats what makes him a decent backman.

Daniel motlop once ran a 400 metre time that was just clicks off being at an Australian competition level - what a shame we're trading him... who does Cathy Freeman play for?

Watt is the quickest bloke at the club over that distance I reckon. He looks slow at FB because he often has no idea what he is doing.

He would beat Wellsy over 100.

No way, Wellsy, along with Davey are quickest chasers ive ever seen. The way tey just reel in blokes, whom arnt exactly slow is amazing
And? It is a one line power sport. Wellsy and Davey chase down over 20 and 30 metres well because they accelerate quicker than most and can deviate lines better than everyone at top speed.

James Walker is widely regarded as the best runner in the AFL, but that would not jump out at you watching him play footy IMO.

Don't know if I agree with this, I would have thought we need to add numbers to our backline and not swap players over.

I can't see Laids letting go of Watt

Hay deal
27 September 2005 Herald Sun
Scott Gullan

FREMANTLE defender Graham Polak, who has been mentioned as a possible centrepiece to a deal to lure Hawthorn's Jonathan Hay west, wants to remain in Perth.

The Dockers have shown interest in West Australian-born Hay, but the Kangaroos are leading the way for the All-Australian defender.

It is believed the Roos would be prepared to give up their first-round draft pick for Hay and are also better placed to accommodate his contract, which is worth about $400,000 a year.

Full-back Shannon Watt could be part of the deal given he is out of contract with no new offer from the Roos.

Seems kind of dumb to trade tall for tall, particularly when Colby has retired. Hawthorn can have any number of half back flankers they want and Baird as well. Sinclair might take up too much time in the solarium for them but he springs to mind.

Hay, Brown and Watt sounds better if you play Brown and Watt further out from goal and Watt on the 3rd tall.

Sounds like nothing more than speculative journalism to me. He's put 2 and 2 together and got 5.

Dean has put so much time into developing Watt. Everyone saw that starting to pay off in the second half of this year. No, he'll never be a fullback, but he did start to show signs of being a good defender in the role he played this year when he had players a around him taking on the big jobs.

It just woudnt make sense to trade him now, not after the aformentioned developement Dean has put into him and especially when they are looking at bringing in a player (Hay) specifically to do those big jobs that releases Shannon to perform the roles better suited to him.

Unless of course Dean has big plans for Perry and/or Schwarz in 06.

I agree with Carlos, more speculation than fact at this stage.

If it were Hay for Watt and we somehow keep our first pick, put me down as a 'yes'.

That said, I would still hope we snared Polak either instead of Hay or as well as.

Maybe Watt could be used as part of a deal to get both Polak and Hay
