Don't wish to rain on his parade as the kid deserves a break but there's a gigantic difference between AFL and VFL as the Shredder who dominated in the VFL and finds himself at Essendon well knows.

Not sure about that, I would have thought he's first cab off the rank to replace Bews.
Fair call, Bews getting a game every week for you at present? Or just brought in as a specialist small forward stopper?

That's very true but, though we know those numbers won't translate directly into AFL numbers, you'd have to be wanting him to be getting a fair bit of it at the lower level before you'd consider him for seniors, wouldn't you?

I guess I'm trying to say that one does the best that one can, with whatever opportunities one has to show one's abilities. :)

He will be hoping to not go back-to-back though!
In some ways a high finish in the reserves B&F and then cut isn't so ludicrous for an afl listed player as it probably means you've played most of your games in the VFL which is an indication that you were simply the 'best of the rest'.

Like Jansen finished quite high up in the VFL B&F, but didn't play well enough for long enough to deserve senior selection.

I hadn't thought of it that way before. Good point.

Bews has to play 90% of games.
Or Guthrie has to go back.
I'd actually prefer both down back.

Guthire permanently down back or playing deep from a mid role? I agree by the way that he should help strengthen our defensive end.

As far as Ruggles goes I think he will have to find another level to get to consideration level. His body probably puts him in front of most of the guys we draft this year ..but its not them he has to get over to be selected. Ig he gets games in front of Smedts and GHS , they should consider options

I thought about it a bit when 10lana broke the votes into votes per game which showed that despite a high finish JJ was well down on a per game basis while Kolo was quite high, probably why he got senior games but JJ did not. He was viewed as being more influential.

Same sort of thing applies in the Carji, Duncan would had to have to have been the most prolific on a per game basis as top 10 in only 11 games is quite good.

As for Ruggles had he been AFL listed in 2015 he would probably not won it as he was playing some quite good footy and likely would have got a few games for us so on that front I'm quite happy he's got his chance now.

Bews played midfield back in the two's and with some success, he proved he's capable to go midfield if asked. Clearly his obvious senior position is small defender but he's not just a one trick pony.
He not only needs to be serviceable in 2016 but a stand out at times to keep the likes of Ruggles behind him.

Yeah, as much as my preference is Guthrie mid, I could see him being moved back with our added midfield depth if Bews doesn't come along

We've sent him back when we're under siege and he looks lost.

I attribute that (in my mind) to him not thinking he's a defender anymore.
Look. I wanted him to be a midfielder. But the team has changed. Put him back, and let his nous be an attribute as we try to rebound the ball through the corridor.

Bews would have to improve his composure and skills to play in an AFL midfield.

Agree with that. Just don't place too higher expectations on him. The playing field is littered with players who were stars at the lower level but couldn 't cut it at a level up. Hope he's not one of them as his enthusiasm deserves reward.

Yes, he is definitely a very keen young man. Not too many young men of that age would be so persistent or be able to pluck up their courage in their hands, risking ridicule, to do what he has done to put his name forward in the eyes of the GFC.

Bews was terrific in the first half of the year before fading away. He'll be first picked at back pocket this year and wouldn't be surprised to see him become our most improved player.
Enright and Mackie will be the first to be replaced if any of our defenders are going to be overtaken.

I am struggling to get Bews into the side but we so desperately need a smaller lock down BP player - especially with Enright to go sooner rather than later.

He does look our best option and so deserves some good time in the seniors - but someone has to be rested or rotated for him to come in.

With another pre-season behind him I am hoping he can run out the season better next year.

Guthrie was our 3rd highest possession winner in 2015, hardly a dud in midfield,... and probably will improve again with added experience.

Congrats in Ruggles first getting the upgrade, then the selection and now a great game.

What a way to get the career going...
