The thing with Ryan, on top of being taken with an entirely speculative pick as you point out, is there are things he can do that are AFL level. He is a great kick for a ruck. And when he does get hitouts he normally directs them well. These are no doubt things the recruiters saw in him. What they were probably hoping for was he would become a lot stronger in the core to allow him to stand up to AFL level rucks and key defenders. It hasn't happened yet and probably won't now, sadly. He looks destined to be a very good ruck/forward one level below AFL footy.

Sims as you would expect for the reasons you gave, is on a different level. He is good on the ground and in the air and looks surprisingly comfortable with the ball in hand in transition play. And he can supply some pressure.
So why the long contract extension? That’s the part we got oh so very wrong unfortunately

My guess..
In our best 22 we want a main Ruck and an impactful fwd who can pinch hit in the Ruck.
Nank is Captain and if he stays healthy he’ll be first pick this season and next and maybe another year after that.(31 in Aug)

Ryan won’t be a fwd who can ruck.
That’s Simms now.

So we haven’t invested in a speculative Ruck (the two BBall players in the vfl aren’t going to make it)and we won’t for the next two years and Samson would be pretty cheap.
If Nank does have to retire early, 🤞he doesn’t, we can find a combative journeyman type no doubt.

Ryan is there so Simms or other younger guys won’t have to be a Main Ruck if the Captain goes down.

I was referring to Ryans length of contract for someone who hasn’t produced or progressed significantly.
Maybe you see something I can’t.

It is probably fair enough to say that was an error now, but it was probably 3 years at $300k. He may have had a nibble from another club at the time and we were sitting with no obvious backup to Nankervis after Naismith did the inevitable knee. It's not as if we are trapped in a Brodie Grundy deal. It was an error we could afford to make.

Starting to think OHB has a chance to get somewhere. Not a physical beast but excellent hands and reaction time. Very good height.

I don’t like just saying a player won’t make it, it’s a bloody great achievement to make it to an AFL list but yeah it does look overs and they don’t seem to be trying to get him games he’s 25 this year.

He doesn’t seem to have something that he’s very good at, so I don’t see him having a standout AFL career and the other thing is if we did have a young talent it’s unlikely he’d get many games with Nank and we’d be at risk of losing him.
I think Ryan is there so they’re not forced to play the younger guys if Nank goes down.

I love how we have three tall forwards that are so complimentary to the team and so diverse from each other. Like many, I was questioning why we picked up a third key forward in the same draft. I thought it must just be for backup because, odds on, only one or two if we were lucky, would come on. Right?! Wrong!

Already, all of them have shown promise and all in different ways. Faull is our hardworking, play maker. He makes everyone else better around him with his presence; bringing the ball to ground, splitting the packs, tackling, shepherding. He plays his best football closer to home where his aggression creates space in congestion. The unsung hero of the forwardline.

Armstrong is our traditional leadup forward. Booking kick, good mark. I feel he'll play his best football as a half forward pushing up the wings. He's a fighter and he loves to split a pack. size and confidence will make him tough to match up on. He's the type of forward that will kick regular bags for us moving forward.

A tall forward who chops out in the ruck, is on every teams wish list. Sims is that for us, at the very least. Unfortunately, he may prove too talented as a ruckman or a forward, to leave him in that hybrid role. At the moment, he is already demonstrating confidence and presence that will already lock him in the team.

I have been really excited by what Armstrong and Faull has already shown, but Sims might just prove to be the most valuable player to our future fortunes, out of them all.

Quiet week we are going to get this for a while with the younger talls .Has a tonne of talent he missed two sitters that one at half time was costly was MIA all day did contest a few bounces we just need to pump games into him get his confidence and sense of belonging can't wait for the game when he tears a team apart and announces himself to the competition however far down the track that is

Ffs who’s alt are you? Can’t you campaigners just stick to one account

Thats pretty funny, my favourite comment was "Don't think we could go wrong with Armstrong or Sims" LOL

Reckon he cried on draft night.

If only there was a thread to document norf fans reactions to draft night ;)

No he's a tall forward first and a ruck second.
We are in desperate need for a successor to Nank. Considering Sims is already essentially our second ruck, it makes sense to continue developing him in that role.
Unless we trade for one, any ruck we draft is going to take longer to develop.

I think we will trade for a Ruck or get 1 as a free agent if Ryan is a flop in 2 years time
Madden is looking good and i have always thought Knobel will end up at Richmond when his apprenticeship at GC is finished

Knobel hasn't been setting the world on fire in the VFL.

To me, no player is the same, and it is early days but, Sims is the closest player to Jimmy Stynes I have seen so far in terms of make up and approach.

If he can get a tank like Jimmy that would be fantastic
Even his accent is like Jimmy ;)
