3rd Ashes Test: Australia v England - Dec 13-17 - WACA

McGrath, Gillespie and Lee are slightly better for mine.

I was talking about this with a mate today. I think we have more depth now in fast bowling than we have for a while (possibly ever).

We also have a Tim May/Peter Taylor like spinner in Lyon who can develop into an even better bowler.

We are actually in a pretty good space bowling wise atm. Which is amazing as 3 years ago we were really worrying about our depth after getting flogged by the Poms out here.

Mickey Arthur has many detractors but he was right a few months ago when he said we had the best bowling depth in the world.

Batting still has major problems though.

Although a Cricinfo hyperbole, apparently some England players will be playing for their careers in the next two Tests. Outside of Prior, who would they be so much under the pump? You can't just get rid of Swann, KP and Anderson.

Carbattery hasn't been too bad but I guess Bresnan didn't do much.

So when England and Australia next meet for the Ashes in England, who do you reckon will be there for 1) England and 2) Australia?

While Michael Clarke will captain the Ashes holders, who will be Clarke's opposite number to try and regain the urn?

Ian Bell will be Captain for England.

England's team will be I think quite similar to the current one. Their selectors will give the old stagers a chance for revenge in 2015 (and will make mass changes after that series). We on the other hand will probably make a few changes.

Harris, Haddin and Rogers are the ones I think won't be there in 2015. Pattinson replaces Harris, Wade replaces Haddin (though his keeping has been poor I still think he is the next best option and his keeping will improve with experience), Hughes replaces Rogers.

Not as bad as we were saying though before the England leg of the Ashes. Warner and Smith have shown the value of persisting and backing talent that you believe have the goods. There is plenty of young talent but probably no Test match ready talent.

We're an old team I think the average age was in the 30's so we will see what happens in the coming years.

I think there's parallels to be drawn with 89.

As much as the series was about Tubby's onslaught and Steve Waugh's breakthrough, it was driven by a core of experienced veterans (Alderman, Lawson, Hughes, Hohns, AB, Deano, G.Marsh) - plenty of those guys were going, gone or on the way out by the next England home series in 1993.

The young blokes in that series (Tubby, Waugh, Boon, Healy) went on to become fixtures and leaders in the side for the next decade as the golden generation started to break through.

Would hope that's the same for Warner, Smith, Lyon etc.

fun ashes fact:

If we bat first in melbourne and Nathan Lyon is dismissed for a score of more than 7 he'll have an average greater than any English batsman for the series

England I think will struggle post 2015 especially in the bowling. They don't have a lot of bowling depth coming through and once they lose Swann and Anderson they will seriously struggle. Broad is good but needs the backup of Swann and Anderson or else he goes to pieces a bit.

i have a question.

the 12th man (ie specialist fielder). do they keep their baggy greens?

I think they get a replica one (though in Bollinger and Faulkner's case they already have a real one).

Johnson - 23 wickets @ 15.47
Harris - 12 wickets @ 23.58
Siddle - 11 wickets @ 22.09
Lyon - 10 wickets @ 31.40
Watson - 3 wickets @ 31.00

Dem averages. Dat all-round bowling performance.

Siddle's averaging 22.09 for the series and he barely even gets a mention.
